VAR ‘turn our backs’ protest plea

|

VAR and new rules – such as the obnoxious hand ball scenario – are causing rucks across the game and ClaretandHugh follower Marc Landsberg argues that some subtle action by the fans may be needed to change things!

By Marc Lansberg

“VAR is here to stay so stuff the fans” seems to be the mantra coming from the likes of Mike “I run football in Britain” Riley etc.

The truth is – as we know – the decision rests with the 20 PL clubs. The ONLY way to protect our beloved game is for fan action!!

There needs to be a concerted effort across all matches to embarrass the PL into realising that fans and even players HATE VAR.

I am not talking silly marches or protests but something more subtle as for example fans turning their back on the match for a minute every match.

The fans have the power to change this nightmare but there needs to be a co-ordinated effort here

  • The way as I see it is for the fans to lobby the owners of the clubs to get the rules changed . I just hope the owners listen and get something done.

I Agree Michael. Also the fans could get a petition to dismiss Riley from his position. Something has got to done.

VAR is a made for and by TV adaptation.
As we already know TV is what pays for football so its here to stay sadly, even though its a two bob, inaccurate, not fit for purpose system.
Its interesting to me how in cricket there is a margin of error that insists that the Umpires call is correct because the ball tracking is imperfect. How is it then that we’re told that an armpit was offside? Is the tech so much better? Nope, not all, its pretty much the same system as in other sports, however PL football is adjudicated on by the same officials that are on the pitch making the poor decisions that caused VAR to be instigated in the first place.

Can’t be compared , a cricket ball’s projected bounce over the stumps moving at over 100mph is totally different and in a different world to football . Just as Tennis is in a different from both of them ..
The VAR ( very accurate rubbish ) in football was intended for goal mouth over the line decisions . Now unfortunately it has spread to Armpits across the pitch … the whole problem stemmed from the “ whole ball over the line “ issue dating back to 1966 .
It should be and always should have been the point of contact .
We are seeing corners taken with the ball outside the quadrant because the ball is deemed to cover the white line regardless of its position and point of contact . It’s these silly things that have changed the game and led to the mess we find ourselves in .
It has led to referee’s ignoring thier need to make a decision and instead of letting football flow they now rely on the technology to make decisions for them . As was so aptly demonstrated against Sheffield United . VAR it destroying the game . There are now instances of deliberate attempts at playing the ball against a players arm .

Couldn’t agree more, just worried that those “dinasours” ie FA and Referee’s Association won’t budge as financially too much has been ” invested” in this farce…

  • Good Ole Daze says:

The ridiculous handball law comes from IFAB, but VAR allows for such scutiny that we get situations like Friday. The PL clubs need to look at how VAR is implemented as it’s clear and obvious that no-one can be satisfied with the current situation. I’m happy to turn my back every time the match is stopped for VAR decisions – that’ll be more than a minute …

***I HAVE NEVER POSTED BEFORE ***
I am a lifelong Hammer now 58 yrs old .
I Fully understand the anger and frustration at the recent VAR episode believe me I was furious .
However I feel strongly that we would all be better of channeling the considerable energy this has generated in our players and management into the team when on the pitch .
The level of Energy would surely blow away our opponents and stamp the Hammers force and focus on the League !

Hit them where it matters most don’t go to matches, buy merchandise or watch on the Tele they are ****ing on the fans from a great height

  • Robert Bass says:

It would be very difficult for everyone, but the best thing would be ball goes in opposition goal, players, supporters, benches, refuse to celebrate. Players then asking referee whether it’s a goal or not. Premier League will start to look stupid. As it would involve completely changing human nature, sadly unlikely to happen

  • Gazza says:

Would love to see both teams start the match with there arms inside the shirt to see what the ref does in protest to stupid handball rule

If every team done it on a Saturday for the first minute it would be funny

  • What about getting a white handkerchief out and waving while the decision is pending, as they do in la liga. It’s noted show of protest, that would be picked up by the cameras on tv.
