Video: David Moyes Liverpool post match presser

David Moyes spoke to the press following the Hammers 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium and this is what he said:

How do you feel the lads competed with Liverpool today?

I thought we competed as well as we could, I didn’t think we played as well as we could but we tried to compete with a really good team, who were just too strong for us today.

How much of that is a learning curve when you are developing a side the way you are?

Liverpool are not the sort of teams we are challenging, we want to challenge them in individual games but their consistency across the season will be much greater as we have seen over recent years. They played much better than us today so we have got no complaints.

What did you say to the players in the dressing room after?

Well we have been on a great run and the players have done really well, so we came into the game really confident feeling like we had a chance to get something from the game and play well but Liverpool made it very difficult for us today and we didn’t do the things that we have been doing really well today.

But overall, I am disappointed with losing the game but I have to move onto the next one very quickly.

How active do you anticipate to be whether it is incomings or outgoings tomorrow on transfer deadline day?

I don’t really think we will be active at all, I think we have probably done our business unless something changes.

We have a squad of players I enjoy working with and I want to concentrate on them rather than people from other clubs and hopefully, we can continue the second half of the season, as well as we started the first half of the season.

Were you a little surprised by the nervousness or lack of composure on the ball?

It was one of the biggest disappointments that we gave the ball away and we didn’t get it down and play.

Some key players needed to do that better who didn’t do it in the moments when we had it, so that is one of the aspects which I don’t think we did as well.

Is that down to individuals or the way Liverpool pressed?

I would put it down to Liverpool’s pressing they were very good at getting after us at every opportunity but you have got to show your composure and what you can do and we did not do that on enough occasions.

Does this sort of game show you the gap between the top three or four teams and West Ham and how do you think it is possible to close this?

I think there are three or four teams who are better than all the rest, I think that is quite an obvious thing to say and Liverpool are in that category.

We are not putting ourselves in that category, I have been in the job a year now and we have been trying to make progress and steady strides, I don’t think we were ever really competing against Liverpool.

We have got ourselves in a really strong position and if we can do so we will try to but we have a long way to go, but it is time as well you need you can’t make these things happen and compete against the best teams in the league immediately it needs a build and stability and an idea of where we are going to go in the future.

Decent post and realistic. As often happens when meeting the top stuff, they play very well and you don’t do what you usually do, compounding it. Onwards and upwards hopefully.
