According to West Ham insider ExWHUEmployee, the club could be ready to tear up the contract of Niclas Füllkrug and allow him to leave the London Stadium for free.

That would be quite a climbdown from the club who, up until last week, were telling anyone willing to listen that it would take €5m to secure the German international.

Two Offers Already On The Table

Claret & Hugh spoke to a well-known football agent last week who informed us:

“There are two deals on the table for Füllkrug. One from Italy and one from Germany. One club can afford to match his wages and the other are offering less but there is no fee for West Ham.”

It would mean that, in effect, West Ham do not need to tear up the striker’s contract because there is already a club willing to take him off the Hammers’ hands.

He’s Not Coming Back

Either way, it would seem Füllkrug will not be playing for West Ham next season.

Whether the club receive a fee or simply save themselves a substantial wage bill almost feels secondary at this point.

My own suspicion is that everybody involved has accepted that the move simply didn’t work.

Family Decisions Need To Be Made

That said, the same agent – who is also representing Edson Álvarez – did add:

“He wants to get his kids enrolled in school and needs to know where he’s playing.”

Which perhaps tells you all you need to know.

The big German wants certainty and West Ham want closure.

After a move which never really got going because of injuries and a lack of goals, it seems both parties are heading towards the same conclusion.
