West Ham United have appointed Karim Virani as interim Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of Karren Brady last week.
Virani was Head of Digital Marketing at West Ham for five years from 2015 to 2020. While at the club, he was in place for the final season at Upton Park and has since gone on to gain valuable experience elsewhere.
West Ham Fill Leadership Vacuum
There is a massive vacuum currently at the top of the club and, with logistical planning needed ahead of the new season, Virani should be able to parachute into West Ham without needing too much time to acclimatise.
Chalk And Cheese Compared To Brady
In terms of comparisons with Brady, it is very much chalk and cheese.
I have little doubt that the likeable Virani will immediately create a far healthier environment behind the scenes at West Ham. But make no mistake about it, both logistically and from a media point of view, he could not be joining the club at a more difficult time.
Virani Sends Clear Message
Upon his appointment, Virani said:
“I am proud and honoured to be returning to West Ham United, a club I have a deep affinity and admiration for.
“This is a massive football club, with incredibly loyal and passionate supporters, a hugely talented and dedicated group of players, coaches and staff, a proud and unique heritage.”
Generally, I would dismiss this kind of statement, which is fairly bog-standard stuff. But having met Karim several times, I can safely say he means every word.
West Ham seem to have appointed somebody who knows the club, cares about it, and has enough internal knowledge to get to work immediately.
Good luck Karim.

So he’s basically keeping the seat warm until a permanent CEO is appointed?
Is he mandated to close any outstanding commercial deals during his interim period.
I think it raises more questions than answers Gonzo.
Excactly what valiable experience has he gained, from where?
I don’t think anyone would accept a long term CEO role considering the ownership structure of the club is set to change.
I’d imagine Kretinsky will appoint his own people to the board.
As for what needs to be done now . . . . season tickets, sponsorship and day to day liaising with the London Stadium ALMO.
Nothing particularly cryptic here DJ, someone had to be appointed.
