West Ham United’s Under 21 side travelled just up the road this evening for a National League Cup clash with local neighbours Braintree Town.
The Hammers youngsters are unbeaten since August and ‘that’ 5-4 defeat against Chelsea’s u’21’s, in which West Ham Striker Josh Landers scored four times in a losing cause.
Hopefully tonight his contemporary Daniel Cummings’ goals will have a more successful outcome. Landers has now left the academy setup on loan back to his homeland and Scottish Championship side Ayr United – leaving the stage set for Cummings to take over.
Cummings netter twice inside the first half hour to help the Academy race into a two goal lead before Braintree pulled one back just before the break.

Hoping to replicate Josh Landers’ success in claret and blue – Dan Cummings
After a huge fanfare when Cummings arrived in east London following his successful short career as a Celtic B striker – but one with Champions League experience for the senior side – little was seen of the forward this year as he missed a whole bunch of academy games with a shoulder injury, before scoring six times for the u21’s upon his return to fitness.
Now seemingly moving out of Josh Landers’ shadow, there are high hopes this season for the 6’1 striker from north of the border and a brace in the National League Cup will do very nicely : Hopefully the academy team can go on and win the tie which, at time of writing is still tilted towards the Hammers at 2-1.
Another proud moment for the Academy of Football as Freddie Potts played 90 minutes in Club Brugge’s 4-3 win at Inter Milan. Once a Hammer….
