Sky Sports News and the Mail Online are both reporting that Wrexham have made an offer for in-demand Newcastle head of recruitment Steve Nickson.
As Claret & Hugh reported earlier today, Nickson has held talks with West Ham to become the club’s new Director of Football, with personal terms agreed.
More importantly, the structure surrounding his recruitment and influence at the club have also been discussed, with Nickson receiving assurances that he would be able to bring in his own people.
Wrexham Throw Spanner In The Works
According to the breaking reports, however, it appears Wrexham have intervened and thrown a spanner in the works with a late offer.
Mail journalist Craig Hope wrote:
“Steve Nickson to West Ham is not a done deal. Sources say Wrexham also interested & that could yet be where Nickson ends up.”
It adds an irritating twist to what had appeared to be a straightforward appointment.
Big Blow If West Ham Miss Out
If Nickson is poached from under the noses of West Ham, it would be a bitter blow to the Hammers, who have spent all week putting together a package for the 62-year-old to oversee the football project.
The club have gone to great lengths to discuss the structure around the role and provide assurances regarding his level of influence.
That in itself underlines just how highly he is regarded.
An Interesting Decision Awaits
We’ll keep you abreast of any updates as and when they happen, but it would appear that the in-demand Nickson now has a very interesting decision to make.
Whether he opts for the Hollywood project in North Wales or the rebuild at West Ham remains to be seen.
Just like my dreams… same old then if we’re getting outbid (now by championship teams) for execs let alone players
