David Moyes, the soon to depart manager of West Ham United, is being touted as a potential candidate for the vacant Republic of Ireland manager position by his former teammate Kevin Kilbane.

Kilbane, a highly decorated Irish international with 110 caps, voiced his support for Moyes on social media. He responded to a post questioning Moyes’ suitability for the role, expressing his belief that Moyes would be “perfect” for the job.

The two share a past association, having played together at Preston North End in the 1990s. Later, Moyes signed Kilbane for Everton in 2003. Kilbane’s extensive experience with the Irish national team adds weight to his endorsement.

The Irish FA is actively seeking a permanent manager to replace Stephen Kenny, who was dismissed after a disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. However, an announcement regarding their choice might not come until September.

With a career spanning 27 years in management, Moyes boasts a respectable resume. His achievements include a successful stint at Everton, a short-lived tenure succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and most recently, guiding West Ham to victory in the UEFA Europa Conference League. These accomplishments make him a strong contender for many European clubs seeking experienced leadership.

Despite Kilbane’s confidence in Moyes’ abilities, there are some important factors to consider. Firstly, Moyes’ potential salary expectations might be beyond the Irish FA’s budget, considering his recent earnings at West Ham. Secondly, Moyes has no prior experience in international management. However, this could be an opportune moment for him to explore a new avenue within the footballing world.
