Adrian needed to be re-trained by Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg has told the Liverpool Echo that he needed to retrain Adrian after his move from West Ham as Liverpool adopt a different style of play.

“Everything he has done so far has been really good, we have not been able to complain much at all. It’s a different style of play; with West Ham he had to kick the ball long 90 per cent of the time, but we asked him to be calm on the ball and play out from the back.

“To be fair, he has picked it up really quickly. He has adapted fast, even though he had a lot of experience playing in the Premier League.

It has helped him a lot to settle quickly. He is a calm and confident guy but also a really good guy. He fits in well, I would say. Big credit to him and what he has done. It has been really good, so we cannot complain.”

Good luck to Adrian at Liverpool, in his wildest dreams he couldn’t have imagined he would become the number one keeper when he signed as a free agent with virtually no interest across Europe until the last moment when Liverpool came swooping in. It doesn’t sound too difficult to re-train a goalkeeper to pass it out from the back instead of kicking it long. One would think any goalkeeper could grasp that concept in a few minutes without hours of practising. The kicking it long does appears to be a Manuel Pellegrini tactic as Fabianski and Roberto both do it regularly for the Hammers so it must something they are told to do by the gaffer. It’s good to hear – if we didn’t know already – that Liverpool have no intention of giving it welly from the back and it’s difficult to understand why the Irons don’t go the same way although Pelle may be looking for those clever flick on and knockdowns from record signing Seb Haller.

  1. It’s not just changing from booting it out to passing it and hey presto! There has to be a complete change on how to read the game to make most effective use of possession and ensure passes are the best option.
I doubt just saying “don’t just boot it” was enough.
