Anderson absence may be very significant

|

The absence of Felipe Anderson from the team that beat Southampton could become one of the most significant moments of the season so far.

I’ll come straight to the point: I really don’t think the Brazilian  is the type of player David Moyes fancies overmuch.

There’s no question the guy is super talented on his day but his days have been seen very rarely this season and after returning from a six week absence it seems seems pretty significant from where i’m sitting that he should be dropped after one game.

More and more it’s being noticed that this is a guy who tends to back away from 50/50s and marginally worse challenges and that’s not going to sit well with this particular manager.

With Pablo Fornals growing into things big time and Tomas Soucek looking a real player suddenly the area of the pitch where we had real problems is looking good.

For me the natural midfielders when fit are Declan Rice , Pablo Fornals , Tomas Soucek , Jarrod Bowen with Snoddy and Noble plus Anderson on the bench.

It seems once a player falls out of favour with the boss it’s hard for them to find a way back – such was the case with Chicharito at Man U – and although it’s only my impression I’m not sure Anderson and Moyes is a fit at all.

I’m not suggesting for a minute that this is a 100 per cent correct observation but I really feel that Moyes may see the Brazilian as a luxury player  perhaps he can do without along with Yarmolenko next summer should we remain in the Premier League.

no mention at all of Lanzini

  • Matty53 says:

You are probably right but I really like Anderson so I hope your wrong
But at the end of the day is the 11 who make the best team that matters
And it is David Moyes who lives or dies by
    The 11 players he choose

    • Simon M says:

Spot on. Anderson, Lanzini, Yarmo, Sanchez, Masuaku and Jack Sprat are all overpaid loafers who wont put their lives on the line for West Ham.
They show no desire and no passion, and since pre-season (with Pelligrini … and add Roberto) they were rolled over by every opponent.
At first Anderson got the attention from the Brazil national coach, but was soon returned to West Ham when some if these inefficiencies came through.
Clearly these is the type of player that is unable to get WH out of relegation and over the 40pt mark.
Moyes now have sufficient 1st team die-hards to chose from, and should let these other watch how it’s done.

  • Mark Wilson says:

    Good, sell him and Lanzini

  • AspiEd says:

    Commitment and fortitude come first.
With clubs (esp. fans) like West Ham, fancy skills are merely a bonus.
It is players like Anderson and Lanzini, not forgetting all the other has-been loan strikers, that got us into this mess.
It is players like those last Saturday (-Noble, +Soucek) who will get us out.
Only then might our esteemed owners dispense with their delusional aspiration of “the next level” (without investing to actually achieve it!) and realise the need to consolidate at the current one, first.
Noble has the commitment but, the way he is currently playing, he can be more of a liability. As though he is trying to prove his doubters wrong, but failing in the process. Moyes does seem to be giving him license to do whatever he likes, wherever he likes and hope for the best.

    • Bazil says:

Noble is past his best no doubt and 60 minutes is probably the max he should play, but there is no denying that he is the most gifted and capable of managing the team on field to get the result. Without that, we would be significantly weaker at the moment.

  • Steve Johnson says:

I think it’s more that given our predicament, he is being pragmatic in not playing the `fancy` players. If we had been on 36 pts going in to this game I think Anderson would have started. But as we needed something from the match we needed players guaranteed to track back and tackl which neither Anderson or Lanzini are renown for. While I agree that Anderson is frustrating, I would stick with him as it is difficult to find players who have the ability to do something different and change a match. he does have that ability.

  • Hammer wayne says:

You are probably right , but he is a quality player , and I think given more of a chance by Moyes he will improve , he has a brain and a skill full ball player and can turn things within a minute .

  • steve m says:

Anderson will get his chances again. He is top quality and just needs to improve his tackling.
Last week you were calling for Antonio to be dropped. He was “man of the match” against Southampton.

  • bubblenspeak says:

The thing is with this post like you’re now laughable agreement you had with dropping Antonio. Is Anderson is not a midfielder.
He is an attacker, best deployed in a 3 like we were against Southampton.
Playing him in a four in midfield is not best for him or the team.
With Rice,Soucek and Fornals behind him, if the front 3 are out of form on the day or injured,Anderson will/can earn his place. But I can bet you he’s a bit ****ed off that we played a 3 with more energy in midfield
Snodgrass plays as an attacker in the main and is slightly better defensively.Noble is quite often the highest presser of the midfield, a mistake as he doesn’t have the legs to come back. Both Pellegrini and Moyes have used that tactic and hasn’t worked.

    • Not at the momenet – he’s one of two up or one up. I think I’ve answered correctly because the first sentence was nearly incomprehensible

    • Lee says:

Bubblenspeak- totally agree, Anderson should be either side of Haller in a front 3, but he spends more time in hes own half which is a waste as on hes day hes probably our most talented player.

  • Whammer1 says:

So no Anderson in your team or even on the bench to face the Arse ..so who is going to.give Cresswell a bit of help against Pepe..who ran him ragged at the LS .so Mark Wilson who’s your choice Arthur! !!?? looking forward to your reply and proposed team selection

  • Gavin Gritton says:

I make you right. I said the same to my mrs, after the game.
I think, they may try and move him on in the summer.
I don’t think they will be able to get rid of the sick notes in the team. But with Anderson, I think they could get a decent amount of the money back. I like him, but I would put all my effort in keeping declan this summer.

  • kcockayne says:

Anderson & Yarmolenko – 2 big girl’s blouses, as we used to be allowed to say !

  • Graham says:

We’ve wasted too much money on Transfer fees and wages on flair players looking for the next ‘wonder player’. Anderson, Yarlmalenko, Tore, fegouli, Wilshere, Ayew, Valencia to name a few. Even when we do strike lucky in a Tevez or Payet, they are on their bike a year later and we are back to square one. We need a team of good, hard working players. Add the flair players once we are pushing on.
Can’t carry passengers in this league.

  • Greeno says:

Can’t disagree with that. 442, or is it a 424!! with (when/ if fit) and a midfield of Soucek, Rice, Fornals and Bowen, has the energy, but is still quite creative.

For next season (if in the PL) we still need a decent LB/ cover, I think we have in Ngakia and Johnson decent RBs. Have heard good reports of Cardoso also [and other in the U23a), so I think decent cover at CB/ elsewhere, maybe another CF?

Sadly I think Lanzini hasn’t been the same since his injury whilst playing for Argentina. Anderson is a great player and I’d love to see him get back to his best/ potential, but I’d rather 2 up front, and the more energetic midfield. Can’t see him wanting to sit on the bench for too long.

All opinions of course and we all want decent football and some success!

  • Adam Cakey says:

He played brilliantly last season, but has lost the bravery to attack and take on full backs, preferring to just turn and pass it back. Hopefully Moyes (with the influence of Bowen) can get a bit more aggression and adventure into him.

As long as the rest are fit, I’d almost give Lanzini the rest of the season off to get over what ever fear is crippling him at the moment. He has been a terrific servant, but something isn’t quite right with him.

When Lanzini and Anderson are on form and combine they look pretty special but they both need their mojo back. Snoddy, Fornals, Bowen and Antonio are doing the business at the moment until then but it would be very useful if Andersons quality reappears in the next 4 games….

    • Jack says:

You can blame Pellegrini for that. Pellegrini told Anderson NOT to run with the ball so much.
“Perhaps he continued running too much with the ball and that was the reason why in the beginning it seemed he was not doing things so well.
“But I always trust in him, I talk always about a lot of different things with him after the game, and he always listens.
“And I am absolutely sure that in the second-half of the season Felipe will be much better.” Words of Manuel Pellegrini.

  • Stuart says:

he has been poor all year, apart from one game is effort and attitude is bad and doesn’t deserve a starting place. He has talent, but only seems to shine, when we are already winning comfortably and the defense is stretched. His end product is probably 20% productive, he’s too scared to shoot and always seems to pick wrong option. i would gladly sell him at end of season, for the money we paid for him, there is a lot better out there !

  • Dusty Miller says:

To my way of thinking Anderson and Lanzini are ‘luxury ‘ players and so to have players like this you have to compensate with minders or at least a player that covers there losing the ball every so often and it is more often than most? Moyes likes grafters the type of player that if they lose a ball goes back and wins it back more or less what Bowen did Saturday ? So in future signings I think Moyes’s will be looking in the lower leagues ( lots of grafters looking to improve their status) one I’m sure he’ll be looking at is Ollie Lee at Brentford ? A player who has a good work ethic just one of the many players that can step up a level as there are a few other players too, so we will have to see how we finish this season and where we are and what we are going to need in terms of players? IMHO while Moyes is in charge due diligence is being done in the lower leagues, rather than on overseas players looking for a big or last payday. It be interesting to see how it pans out plus we will have players coming back from Loans and some have excelled in the lower leagues ??? That’s of course GSB keep Moyes as the ‘gaffer ‘ of course Moyes getting Hugill and persevering with Masuaku blots his copy book but this transfer window in ain’t done so bad !!!! Keeping the faith C.O.Y.I ⚒⚒⚒

    • Dusty Miller says:

      Meant Ollie Watkins not Lee ( I’m a plum I know 🤣)

      • blimey! says:

        Oh Dusty Plum…….

Pep took over a Man Citeh team full of highly skilled/talented ‘luxury’ plyers and got them to work their blooming socks off, particularly after losing the ball, shutting down the oppoaition from high up the pitch…. of course, nobody likes to watch Man Citeh’s style of football, and for that we are truly thankful…. Amen

        • Dusty Miller says:

Well Blimey we are what we are? And we certainly are not as rich as Man City ? So being only able to get one or two luxury players instead of buying 22 like city and paying massive wages to buy the best enforcers (Rodri) for example to protect the Billy wiz entertaining players city have that again we just don’t have ? So much for fair play and the governing bodies of football? At the moment pending appeal city might have gone overboard in breaking the laws to getting a perfect entertaining team ??? And we wouldn’t want that would we👍😊

  • Mike Owers says:

Do you really think that the fans ( including me ) that loved Byrne, Peters, Brooking, Devonshire and De Canio don’t appreciate players with delicate skills? I think you will find that players with real footballing skills are admired by Irons fans more than most. However, these same fans also demand real effort and for most of this season Anderson has looked to me as though he would rather be somewhere a lot warmer and less stressful.

  • kcockayne says:

Anderson & Yarmolenko are both luxury players. When the chips are down , & you need players to “put in a shift”, they are noticeable by their absence. They are not the sort of players that West Ham need in their current predicament – where fight & effort are needed. I would say “get rid”, but I don’t think that either will have advanced their reputations by their performances this season. Yes, at times they look good – but it is generally only those times when the rest of the team are doing well. So, this season, not a lot !

  • Saul says:

Interesting to see a fair amount of fans saying they would sell Anderson. I understand why. I do think, however, that Moyes being the type of manager he is, could coach Anderson to have a steelier side. The current Brazil manager likes people who get stuck in too so it may do him good to stick with us and hopefully get Moyes to help him find his ‘Cojones’. If he stays, he needs to shine next season otherwise he’ll be gone for sure. Due to this horrendous season, i think some should be given a clean slate next year and be given the season to prove themselves. Of course, with Diangana likely to be back, Anderson might not even get that chance. Plus, having spent potentially £40-45m this January, we may need to sell anyway?

I think Bowen was bought as a Yarmo replacement. Yarmo has never had a defensive side so he’ll be out the door in the summer. And as for Lanzini? Such a talented player and i think Moyes will bring him back in if we get to safety this season with a few games to spare but just doesn’t seem cut out for the blood and thunder of the Premier League anymore. We could get £25m i reckon, which is a healthy profit (for once).

  • John Shetcliffe says:

Without doubt Anderson needs to improve his defensive work rate & weak tackling, but he can open defences much more often than any other West Ham player! With Watford beating Liverpool, Hammers must get to 39 pts maybe more. Anderson will be needed to secure 3 pts against the imminent opponents with better defences than Southampton.

Noble, Masuaku & Snodgrass are simply not good enough. Masuaku is a calamity & must not be included in any future squads. Soucek must replace Noble when fit & Snodgrass can be used as an energetic sub to see games out, but told to less reckless with his tackling giving away free kicks in dangerous positions.

Anderson’s confidence & match fitness must be restored ASAP.

    Then team can be:

    Fabinaski

    Ngakia Diop Ogbonna Cresswell

Bowen Rice Fornals (Soucek when fit) Anderson

    Antonio Haller

  • Farehamhammer says:

It is a game of opinions. No way should Anderson be sold.He like everybody else has not had had the best of seasons. At his best he is a special player.Even against Liverpool when just back from injury he was an outlet for a under pressure defence. No coincidence that when he went off we got pushed further back till we conceded two late goals.Without a shadow of doubt we needed Anderson back at his best. The big problem in the team has been a pathetic midfield.Noble has cost us in game after game. There is no room for sentimentality in football ,but that will change when Soucek is back.Well played to Moyes and Sullivan in bringing Souceck and Bowen to the Club !Great Business !I’m not a Antonio fan ,the Forest Gump of footballers.Yes he has pace , but is awfully technically, can’t spot a pass and a awful first touch as well as fairly injury prone.Still we have Pablo Fornals don’t you understand ,he finds the back of the net better the Payet.Irrespective of our opinion of players ,I think we have some really exciting players in the squad and great talent emerging from The Academy.I can see the day when we are at Wembley, black balloons replaced by claret and blue ones.We are more than a football Club ,we’re a way of life !COYI!!!
