Andre Ayew catches Malaria

|

andre-ayew-west-ham_3766957Ghana claim Andre Ayew is doubtful for Saturday’s crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations clash with Mali because he has suspected Malaria.

Former West Ham manager now Black Stars coach Avram Grant would not confirm the sort of illness but Ghanain media is claiming it he suspected to have malaria in the mosquito-ridden Group D base of Port Gentil.

Grant confirmed during Friday’s pre-match press conference that the West Ham  star has contracted illness and must win the fitness battle for the second Group match. Ayew did not train fully with the squad on Thursday which prompted questions about his fitness for Saturday’s match.

Grant confirmed that the player was unwell but won’t reveal the sort of injury insisting that he must be confirmed by doctors before he can play. Ayew scored from the spot as Ghana beat Uganda 1-0 to open their campaign last Tuesday.

West Ham were unable to comment on the medical state of their player claiming they were un-aware whether Ayew has Malaria or not.

Surely players are given anti-malaria tablets or is this another poor medical care like Sakho .

    That’s just what we need.

Its no biggie in most cases. It is fairly easy to treat. If he does have it depending on the strain i wouldnt be surprised if he is back playing before the tournament has even ended.
Malaria only generally kills because people cant get treatment. With treatment its no drama.

The point is that you shouldn’t need to treat it – you take the anti-malarials to prevent you contracting it, that way you don’t get ill & need treatment!
Symptoms don’t show up until 1-2 weeks after infection, by which time the parasite has already lodged in the liver.
Early diagnosis & treatment is certainly helpful, but why put yourself at risk?
