Boleyn Farewell: Dog stops play!

|
photo (13)It was the 15th of April 1972 and the Hammers were playing Liverpool in the penultimate home game of the season.
A dog happened onto the pitch and let Ray Clemence know what he had thought of the game so far. Goals by Steve Heighway and John Toshack  left Clem with the last laugh as Liverpool  won 2-0 on their way  to a third placed finish while the Hammers ended up in 14th.
Two notable players in Hammers history said farewell  to the club in playing in their last game. Three-time Hammer of the Year Geoff Hurst bowed out after 411 games and 180 goals while Harry Redknapp also made his last appearance as a player for the club.

Makes one remember how quickly Geoff’s form declined. 2 years before with probably the best England team ever though sadly even then he was playing a bit on memory and within 2 years clearly no longer good enough for West Ham. I guess his highly energetic game just caught up on him a little early than expected, though to be honest most strikers were rapidly becoming past it by 30 back then.
