Brazilian defender can fill multiple roles – if West Ham can land him in time

West Ham are still planning on more business ahead of tomorrow night’s 11pm deadline. The club have been working on – but have not yet unveiled – Edvin Austbø following reports that he’d travelled to London for a medical on Saturday. That transfer will hopefully be confirmed today.

Defensive reinforcements – for very obvious reasons – remain the club’s priority (erm – somewhat belatedly) with ExWHUEmployee reporting this morning that the Hammers are planning a last minute push for a Premier League centre back who can play as a left back – ideal after flogging off our first choice left back at the weekend.

According to Ex:

West Ham have been in talks with Nottingham Forest over the signing of Brazilian defender Morato,” stated the insider. “The player is 6’4 and can play at centre back or left back. He joined Nottingham Forest in June 2024 whilst Nuno was the manager and played 29 times for him during his first season at the club.

“It was thought that he would join Roma on loan but this deal has stalled.

“Meaning he has been in talks with West Ham. Both a straight loan deal and a loan with obligation have been discussed and this is what is holding up the deal”

Frankly, at this stage of the window we’d settle for either option rather than being reliant on Ollie Scarles: He’s going to be a top defender but it isn’t fair or appropriate to get further into a Championship season with Scarles as the only left sided full back on the club’s books.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Ollie Scarles is going to be a top defender!! How is that ever possible? Watch him slide to League 1 and then all the way down to step 1 over next couple of seasons. He is young, but it’s crystal clear he is out of his depth at West Ham. Maybe, he looks good to Nervous Nuno in training, but put him into a real match and the opposition see him as the weakest link and fully exploit it.

Scarles will never be top of anything, so overrated. Out of all the youngsters we’ve let go we’re left with him? I feel sick/nervous when he gets the ball? I wouldn’t play him in a Sunday league game? I wanted to be an astronaut but I’m too thick, he wants to be a footballer but??????

  • John Hurford says:

If he can play both LB and CB that should kill 2 birds with one stone. Astbo and Vardy on a free then we should be sorted.

  • jake2002 says:

Be good if true, we desperately need cover/upgrade on Ollie rather than playing KWP out of position plus Veltman hasn’t the pace to fill in as a full back, he should be used as cover for the centre backs.

  • Lennie says:

If you think scharles is going to be a top full back ,you really need a reality check, I’ve followed west ham since 1963, I honestly can’t think of a worse defender, a total liability, he’ll get us out of the championship bo sweat, straight into the 1st division, wake up.

  • Timbo says:

Sounds about right, we need a centre back and left back so we get a cheap loan for a bloke who can cover both. Personally I can’t wait until the window closes as then it is all about the manager getting the most out of what should be a very strong Championship squad. No more distractions or excuses.

What happened to the Czech skipper we were negotiating with yesterday?

Good c back Nuno choice from Forest Would be a good buy PLease can somebody on here explain to me the point of Koppen Ide really like to understand the appointment and the way our club is thinking and being run

  • ForReal says:

Sorry, but Scarles isn’t going to be a top defender. I wish him well, being a local lad and a West Ham fan, but it’s clear that he isn’t even up to Championship football at this stage.

He needs to drop into League One and see how he fairs there.

I think it’s blindingly obvious that Mayers has far more ability and potential at left-back which seems to be lost on the manager, but that doesn’t surprise me one iota.

    • mick bering says:

agree ForReal SCARLES GETS DONE EVERY GAME GOING BACK TO THE LIVERPOOL GAME WHERE HE GOT ROASTED BY MO SALAH HASNT IMPROVED SADLY SINCE

  • Towers says:

    Didnt kilman play for nuno????

    • Pauldehammer says:

Not a good omen…but if this guy was wanted by Roma, he must be half decent surely..and why are we messing about with “Loans” if we want him why not just buy him. Or is it a case of loan him because anyone will do.

      • Julian Woodhouse says:

Oh I would love us to bring in Vardy, if only for a year, he would have such a good impact imo

      • Julian Woodhouse says:

We are broke, we have very little money for incomings due to our debts and the £115 million RMF loan we have to service as a priority. It means none of what we have sold so far can be used to go towards player recruitment.

    • Tyso says:

      Was he signed under Nuno?
