West Ham will wait to see if the third relaxation of Covid restrictions goes ahead on June 21 before planning a Hammer of the Year vote and presentation ceremony.
We have finally received an answer from the club to our numerous inquiries as to why the vote hasn’t already been held and plans made for the awards ceremony.
Now we can reveal exclusively that once again it’s covid which is the villain of the piece with the India variant now threatening to delay what has been widely dubbed ‘Freedom Day’ on June 21.
That is why the hugely anticipated moment in the season is being kept on hold.
However, should the government go ahead with its plan to open up the country again voting will be announced about two weeks before the event.
The alternative will be for the club to hold a smaller socially distanced event, or in the worst case scenario, make the award to the various winners of each category at the opening home game of next season with voting being held towards the end of July.
