West Ham United’s crucial Championship match at Cardiff City will take place against the backdrop of a dramatic managerial change. Nuno Espírito Santo has been sacked with immediate effect following consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

Scott Parker is expected to replace him, with discussions at an advanced stage and an official announcement anticipated. However, at the time of writing, West Ham have only confirmed that Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville are preparing the squad for Wednesday night.

The change completely transforms the complexion of a match which had looked capable of determining Nuno’s future. West Ham now travel to Wales looking for an immediate response, a much-needed lift and the first glimpse of what could become Parker’s latest Championship promotion challenge.

West Ham Finally Act On Nuno

West Ham confirmed Nuno’s departure following what the club described as a thorough review of the Championship season. Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also left, bringing the Portuguese coach’s reign to a complete end.

The decision is hardly surprising after Saturday’s dreadful 3-1 defeat against West Brom. West Ham showed little motivation, lacked a coherent tactical plan and were repeatedly exposed by a team operating with far greater organisation and purpose.

Nuno leaves the Hammers eighth in the Championship after six victories from 13 league matches. We are six points behind leaders Middlesbrough and four away from the automatic-promotion places, which is not an insurmountable position but is considerably worse than expected.

The official statement explained that the board believed change was necessary to keep the club’s objectives on track. That is difficult to argue with because West Ham’s target was never to scrape into the play-offs; it was to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

The full announcement confirming Nuno’s departure can be read in West Ham United’s official club statement.

Scott Parker Expected To Take Charge

Scott Parker is now expected to become West Ham’s new head coach. The former Hammer has been identified as the leading candidate, with multiple reports suggesting an agreement has been reached and only the formal announcement remains outstanding.

Parker’s record in the Championship is the obvious attraction. He has won promotion with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley, meaning he understands both the division and the specific challenge West Ham face.

He also knows the club. Parker made 129 appearances for the Hammers between 2007 and 2011, captained the team and won Hammer of the Year in three consecutive seasons.

According to our latest information, Parker’s proposed contract is heavily linked to promotion. He is expected to receive a longer-term opportunity if he takes West Ham up, while the club would retain protection if that objective is not achieved.

Who Takes Charge At Cardiff?

The timing creates an unusual situation before Wednesday’s match. West Ham have stated that Noble, Potts and Prenderville are temporarily overseeing preparations, but Parker could still be formally appointed before the squad travels to Wales.

Whether he would immediately take charge from the dugout remains unclear. Even if he does, there will be very little time for Parker to introduce significant tactical changes or properly assess a squad he has not coached.

That means the team will probably have to rely upon a reaction to Nuno’s departure rather than any sophisticated new system. The players can no longer hide behind complaints about the previous manager’s tactics, selections or motivational skills.

This is now an opportunity for them to demonstrate that they are considerably better than recent performances have suggested.

Radical Changes Are Still Required

Changing the manager does not automatically correct everything which went wrong against Southampton and West Brom. West Ham remain vulnerable defensively, disjointed in midfield and overly reliant upon Jarrod Bowen in attack.

My preferred formation remains a 4-1-4-1, accompanied by drastic changes. Alphonse Areola deserves an opportunity in goal because Mads Hermansen has not done enough to make himself untouchable.

Joël Veltman should start at right-back, with Airidas Golambeckis partnering Max Kilman if Dinos Mavropanos remains unavailable. Kyle Walker-Peters would play on the left if he recovers from the injury sustained against West Brom, although his fitness remains uncertain.

Soungoutou Magassa should operate as the holding midfielder, providing the defensive protection West Ham have been missing. Lewis Orford and Divine Mukasa would then be free to play ahead of him, rather than being asked to perform roles which do not suit their strengths.

Edvin Austbø and Bowen would provide the width, with Joël Piroe finally receiving a proper opportunity as the central striker. As I argued before Nuno’s dismissal, West Ham need to stop repeating the same selection mistakes.

Gonzo’s West Ham Team

The managerial upheaval makes an honest predicted XI almost impossible. This is therefore the team I would hand to Parker or the interim coaching staff, subject to Walker-Peters and Mavropanos being declared fit.

Position Player
GK Alphonse Areola
RB Joël Veltman
CB Airidas Golambeckis
CB Max Kilman
LB Kyle Walker-Peters
DM Soungoutou Magassa
CM Lewis Orford
CM Divine Mukasa
RW Jarrod Bowen
LW Edvin Austbø
CF Joël Piroe

Formation: 4-1-4-1

Cardiff’s Injury Problems Offer An Opportunity

Cardiff sit 17th after gaining promotion as League One runners-up last season. Brian Barry-Murphy’s team had been unbeaten in three before suffering a 3-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Bluebirds could also have up to eight players unavailable. Gabriel Osho is suspended, while Will Fish, Perry Ng, Dylan Lawlor, Calum Chambers, Krystian Bielik, Alex Robertson and Isaak Davies are injury doubts.

That does not guarantee West Ham anything, particularly during a turbulent 24 hours at the club. However, it gives the Hammers a very good opportunity to respond immediately and begin repairing the damage caused by consecutive defeats.

The mood around the squad should already have changed. Players who were overlooked or used incorrectly by Nuno now have the chance to impress a new coaching team, while those who had become automatic selections can no longer take their places for granted.

Gonzo’s Prediction

My original prediction was a 1-1 draw, largely because nothing about West Ham’s recent performances inspired confidence. Nuno’s dismissal introduces the possibility of a reaction, but it does not instantly repair the team’s defensive and attacking problems.

West Ham possess more than enough ability to beat a depleted Cardiff team. The uncertainty is whether the players can produce a coherent performance so soon after a major managerial change.

I expect greater energy and urgency, but I will retain my original prediction until we know whether Parker will be in the dugout and which players are available.

Prediction: Cardiff City 1-1 West Ham United

If it ends 1-1 then Nuno has to go, 1 point from 9 just isn’t good enough. These are now his pick of players, his tactics his team management. No excuses!

The reason Nuno is capable of getting wins against Cardiff and Blackburn is because they are not difficult opposition even for dysfunctional West Ham. Why Nuno gets credit for every win is beyond me. He does not know the meaning of the word team and could not pull one together if his life depended on it. So West Ham will win, the rhetoric will be that all is great again, Nuno will get the credit, and the pantomime will continue. We will give him until the next International break. Why? We will give him until Christmas, and so on. Why? We are paying him millions, isn’t that enough? By then he will have cost us a few more millions due to another season in second tier football. Don’t forget we are skint as well, so the excuse for not signing any quality is already in place. Well, he is doing his best, let’s all get behind him. Really?

I had us down to lose the last two games – which we duly did – & the team is unable to defend capably. Add this to strikers who cannot score & you would be hard pressed to think that we will win this game. But, I think we will – but don’t ask me how !

Cool heads needed at the top. 22 points from 12 games. 2 points required per game for automatic promotion. Currently 2 points under that target.
