There is no love lost between West Ham and Mike Dean.
In fact, the last sending off of a West Ham player was Mike Dean also when he sent off Arthur Masuaku for a second yellow against Aston Villa in 2019.
Dean dismissed the Hammer with 23 minutes left after picking up two bookings.
Then West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini disagreed with the decision to send off his left-back. “It was a typical sending off when you play away, with the pressure of the fans in every foul,” he told BBC Sport adding there was minimal contact.
In 2017 West Ham’s midfielder Sofiane Feghouli has had his red card against Manchester United handed out by Mike Dean rescinded by the Football Association after a successful appeal.
In 2016 Dean awarded a second yellow card against Winston Reid for a challenge against Harry Kane sending the Hammer off. Commentators at the time called the decision very harsh on the centre back.
In 2003 he sent off Steve Lomas for a professional foul against Arsenal while ignoring Denis Bergkamp attack on Lee Bowyer’s face.
It’s not only Dean, the premier league and FA have tried to punish West ham at every opportunity since the Carlos Tevez affair. I’m not sure how they can profess to have any integrity. Shame on the lot of them.
Well compiled synopsis Sean. There are two things about his refereeing backed up by facts, not least by overturns. He is an erratic referee often unable to keep up, but he makes very controversial decisions in penalties and red cards. Not only that, but they all seem to be against Southern teams – cue this past week. He should be removed based on performance – and football is big business today.
