Declan compared to Premier League legend

|

Declan Rice has been compared to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard by ex-Irons striker Teddy Sheringham.

Sheringham enjoyed a storied career in the Premier League, playing for the likes of Manchester United, Spurs and the Irons.

And he has been blown away by the performances of the England international thus far this season as the Hammers continue to push for qualification to Europe, comparing him to the current Aston Villa boss.

Gerrard, of course, was a genuinely exceptional figure for Liverpool, leading them to numerous trophies as captain, including that brilliant Champions League win back in 2005, when he inspired a comeback as the Reds came from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties.

Quoted by The Daily Mail, the ex-striker, who is currently out of the game and working as a pundit, said of the Hammer: “I have to liken him to Steven Gerrard. Not many players can eat up the ground like Declan – Gerrard used to do exactly the same, he used to overpower people in midfield.

“Add that to his passing ability, his understanding of the game, his knowledge of the game, he’s obviously getting led by Mark Noble. His desire, you can see how he loves the game and wants to get better.

“For me, he’s up there with the top players in the world in midfield at the moment, there’s no denying that.”

Declan will next be in action this weekend when the Hammers face struggling Newcastle on Saturday.
