Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has spoken to Sky Sports News about recent speculation linking him to a return to West Ham.
“There’s going to be speculation because, let’s be honest, the people that score goals are wanted, over the years, anyone that has scored goals has been talked about in terms of moving to different clubs. I think it’s just part and parcel. The players don’t really get involved; you just get your head down and you play football. It’s a good feeling to be wanted but when you’re playing well and scoring goals then you must be enjoying being at the place you’re at.
“I think the game has changed now with the sports science and what we have now, you can play for as long as you want. I’d rather be in a league where you play a lot of games in a short space of time because if you’re feeling sharp and scoring goals you just want to be playing.”
Defoe scored 41 goals in 105 games for West Ham between 1999 and 2004 before handing in a transfer request following relegation in 2003.
come back home son all is forgiven
Full house fellas.I am with you all on this one..
Agree with all of the above . Stuff the dinosauers who have never made a mistake . Defoe realised he was wrong and apologised . Can’t forget he played for the Spuds but a goal for us against them for us will soon wipe out the memory . He would cost less than the wasted loan fees that contributed not a single goal . Get rid of Noble and give the £5m a year to Defoe . At least he will contribute something to the team .
Defoe has always scored goals and knows when to move and make space to get into scoring positions. I am surprised that none of the big clubs ever signed him.
I’ve said it before, he was young, naive and poorly advised.
He has apologised for his mistake and he won’t be the first or last of us who have made them in life!
If he was to come back then he should be welcomed for what he has become, ie a top goal scorer, it’s just a pity we couldn’t have got him much sooner – but such is life.
Get over it whingers and let us all move on.
I said it the other day & i.certainly aint changed my mind that we shoukd go all in to get him.If Blunderland want 10-12m then pay it.
If other fans want to boycott the club because of signing him then go for it.I couldnt give a sh*t 😁😁
I was a big fan of the boy when he played for us. When he was a boy. I disliked him for the way he left. I disliked him even more for playing for Tottenham. I disliked him even more when he took a nite out of javier mascherano. But then I watched his documentary where he talked about his love for West Ham and his apology for the way he left etc. He came across as a nice bloke to be honest. And I found myself almost ready to forgive him. Now all he needs to do is come and score goals for us and I will like him again. Score a goal for us against Tottenham and I will forgive him everything.
Does that mean he may hand in a transfer request because Sunderland are on a run that leads to relegation ? . Just added fuel to the speculation of a move to West Ham that seems to be gathering pace . If he wants a lot of games then he should come to West Ham and help us get into the Europa League ; guaranteed loads of back to back games if that happens .
Happy New Year Kev!
I’d love to see us qualify for Europa, but it would take a small miracle for us to make the top 6 in the EPL? Theoretically, it is still possible, but we would require a ‘near-perfect run’ in the second half of the season.
Defoe has the goods, although he has never been better than a 1;2 goal-scorer. Should we give Tony Martinez some playing time?
However, we could qualify by winning the FA Cup, but once again, it will not be easy, especially considering our round 3 opponents- Manchester City!
