West Ham request formal delay for AFCON duty

|

andre-ayew-west-ham_3766957West Ham United have written to the Ghana Football Association to request the delay the arrival of Andre Ayew to the Black Stars Africa Cup of Nations camp, GHANASoccernet.com has reported.

The Hammers want Ayew  available for the Premier League match against Manchester United at the London Stadium on 2nd January. West Ham are currently mandated to release their player on New Year’s Day which will be 14 days to the start of the tournament in Gabon.

West Ham are set to lose Sofiane Feghouli and Cheik Kouyate in addition to Andre Ayew and one wonders whether the club have made similar requests to the Algerian and Senegalese football associations to  delay their other players joining the training camps.

Diafra Sakho will not travel to AFCON after having an operation just before Christmas, he will not be fit until Spring medical staff claimed yesterday.  The 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) runs from 14th January through to the 5th February.

This AFCON is every two years, this is putting European clubs off of having too many Africans,in their ranks. In the end they will try to get them to retire International football before signing them.
Ourselves missing Chek and Ayew ( just as he comes back) Feghouli ( as he shows form) is an irritation we could well do without, all three of those either scored assisted,or played superb in cheks case,in the demolition of Swansea.
In my opinion Kouyates the biggest miss.He has been a revelation as a centre back, even though he’s played there for previous clubs and country. I still prefer him in midfield,I’d like to see him paired with Obiang in the middle. Still after the irritation of the AFCON perhaps. COYI

I can’t see them allowing it unless Ayew request to stay for the game can anyone else ? Why would they risk him getting injured when he is the vice captain of the team.

  • slaven a laugh says:

Who do we think we are? We wouldn’t stop an England player from joining a training camp prior to a tournament so why stop a Ghanaian from joining his. Smacks of arrogance to tell Ghana that our need is greater than their country. Patronising and arrogant. We sign these players knowing they will probably play in African cup of nations so like it or lump it I say.
