Eddie Howe speaks out on Hammers link

|

Eddie Howe appears to have made it clear that he is staying on the south coast into the forseeable future.

Despite rumours all week from various sources that he and his backroom team are open to approaches from West Ham or elsewhere, the 41 year. has ruled it out according to Sky Sports.

In their report at https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11743/11873218/eddie-howe-says-there-is-no-glass-ceiling-at-bournemouth-amid-everton-and-west-ham-links Sky claim: ‘ Howe, who is currently the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, is under contract at the Cherries until the summer of 2020, but insists he will not be moving elsewhere.’

And he is reported as saying: “I always say if I am linked with other clubs and my players are too, then that has to be flattering. I have been spending no time on those things and all week it has been about preparing for Tottenham.”

When asked whether he would have to move to another club in order to challenge for top domestic trophies, Howe responded: “I think for me to answer that question and say there is a glass ceiling on it would be hugely damaging to my players, so absolutely not.

“People would have put a glass ceiling on us in the Championship and for never being able to get to the Premier League, we’ve done all of those things.

“Now we are fighting to create new memories towards the top of the Premier League and that’s the message to my players, we have to believe we can do that.

“I always have the approach to my work and to life really that you can achieve anything if you work hard enough, if you truly believe you can do it then you can.”

ClaretandHugh says: Eddie Howe seems unlikely to be moving from Bournemouth – a situation recognised not only by West Ham but most other clubs in Britain. He has spent most of his football life in the area and his statement today seems to make it clear he’s happy. When talking of a ‘glass ceiling’ is  making it clear there are no restrictions on what he and his team can’t achieve at the club which a few short years was on the edge of extinction. It’s not true and has never been true in Howe’s case because if it had been he would have been here a long time ago. We reported his No 2 Jason Tindal was from Mile End and a West Ham family but in reality the pair could have been at West Ham in 2015 at around the same time as Slaven Bilic arrived at West Ham. Instead Howe signed a deal to stay at Bournemouth. We’ve been in the game too long to accept that the unexpected can’t happen but what he is saying right now – whilst remaining a little ambiguous – shouldn’t start rising expectations too high.

  • Stubbo says:

In reality none of the text you’ve quoted rules it out in the slightest.

He certainly doesn’t say, “I’ve no interest in leaving Bournemouth, am totally happy at the club, hope to be here for many years to come and theirs and my own ambitions are aligned” or words to that effect. He says what you’d expect any incumbent manager to say.

    • So what do you reckon the “absolutely not ” here means
When asked whether he would have to move to another club in order to challenge for top domestic trophies, Howe responded: “I think for me to answer that question and say there is a glass ceiling on it would be hugely damaging to my players, so absolutely not.

I’d say he’s saying “absolutely not” to protect his players rather than completely shutting the rumour down. As it’s states “would be hugely damaging to my players”.

So there’s still something in the Howe rumour.

Also out of the whole interview you’ve picked out “absolutely not”, based your(Sky have done the same) piece on that and not put it into context.

  • Jim says:

Eddie you are better off at Bournemouth, where you are doing a fantastic job. West Ham is not the place for you, It would not be an upward move as this club as big as it is struggles year after year with many high cost footballers arriving and leaving and EH has consistently kept Bournemouth in a similar area in the league as the hammers. as the article says we have seen a few managers come and go while he has been at Bournemouth and over achieving for their finances etc Stay where you Ed

  • Kevin says:

Why would Howe with a good reputation and a squad playing good football better than West Ham want to move . He has a great chance of building a legacy where he is . It would ruin him to come to A toxic west ham . Those that want him are casting pies in the skies . He is happy where he is .

  • Alf says:

Also kumb.com have a completely different stance on this. A more truthful account of what was said and what wasn’t. Like sky’s headline Howe: my future is at Bournemouth is complete nonsense as those words were never said once by Howe.

Then your piece, just copy and paste then endorsing it, when in context there’s not a convincing statement staying he’s stay put, only in reference to protecting his players as all managers do when speculation is around.

  • The Honest Friend says:

I agree with Stubbo on this one

  • Kevin says:

Why would a good Manager leave his position at a good club to join a failure like West Ham United ? . All our dreams of Europe have been destroyed by Pelligrini . He has single handedly reduced us to a nonsense club . Don’t understand the delay in sacking him .
As always it’s Money …. leave it there . He is being paid loads & loads .
Chelsea will knock us for six tomorrow , then what ? , give Pelligrini more time ? Ha ha .
Time to call in the Avengers or Thunderbirds ,,, ffs get rid of him . Never have I felt more strongly against a West Ham United manager . I was willing to give the past three the benefit of the doubt ,,, but this idiot needs outing now .

  • Richard Wheatley says:

It means that he doesn’t have to move to another club to challenge for domestic trophies but if he’s paid enough at another club then he would leave, as anyone would.

  • Chris says:

Lol some of the people in here twisting Howes words in the hope he’ll come to West Ham are utterly ridiculous. He said absolutely not.

  • Essexirons says:

What would you expect any manager at any club to say when asked if he would leave if so & so club came knocking? Every time he would deny it & come out with that line.
WHU are a bigger club than Bournmouth & we have the potential to so much more. The table might read different atm but with the right man in charge we would get things back on track & climb back up the table.
