Claret & Hugh has exclusively learned this evening that Hammers full-back Emerson could return sooner than expected.

The Italian international has been in exceptional form this season but was substituted with an injury against Freiburg. Whilst Emerson managed to walk from the pitch during the second half of the Europa League last 16 fixture, rumours were circulating that he could be missing for up to six weeks.

Speaking to our top source at the club, we have learned that the left-back is expected to be back between 7 and 14 days. However, C&H were cryptically informed, “The player has an outside chance of making Thursday.

This would be excellent news. Thursday, of course, is the return leg of the Europa last 16 match against the German side who hold a 1-0 aggregate lead. Aaron Cresswell performed admirably against Burnley in yesterday’s Premier League game, but a fit Emerson walks straight back into the team for a game the Hammers must win.

Whilst it would be too simplistic to blame Sunday’s first-half performance on the absence of the former Chelsea man, he would certainly give the Irons an extra dimension in attack.
