Alonso fully focused on Hammers: Leverkusen vs West Ham
Xabi Alonso is zeroing in on tomorrow’s clash with West Ham, putting aside thoughts of a landmark weekend that could see Bayer Leverkusen clinch their first Bundesliga title. Despite being unbeaten in 41 games this season and on the brink of victory, Leverkusen’s immediate attention is on the Europa League quarter-final against the Hammers.
Alonso, at a press briefing, highlighted West Ham’s European prowess, referencing their Conference League triumph last year. He emphasised Leverkusen’s readiness and focus on implementing their game plan in the upcoming matches, both at home and at The London Stadium.
The former Liverpool midfielder said. “We know what West Ham can do. They have experience in Europe, last season they were champions of the Conference League.
“We want to go further and starting tomorrow and then next week in London, we have to play to our own game. We are ready.”
The Leverkusen squad, under Alonso’s guidance, has shown strong form, a sentiment echoed by defender Jeremie Frimpong, who praised the positive atmosphere and connection under Alonso’s leadership. This comes amid rumours that Alonso was considered for the Liverpool managerial position, a role he has since sidestepped to remain at Leverkusen.
Leverkusen’s journey last season saw them exit the Europa League at the semi-finals, a memory Frimpong recalls as challenging but motivating for this season’s campaign. He expressed excitement for the upcoming quarter-final, emphasising the thrill of competing against top-tier teams.
While West Ham may be anxious about Jarrod Bowen’s fitness for the upcoming game, Leverkusen faces its own challenge with striker Adam Hlozek side-lined due to an ankle injury sustained in their recent victory over Union Berlin.
