Former Hammer Gary O’Neil bids to win a third Premier League promotion with a third club through the Championship play off final at Wembley today
In 2012, O’Neil was part of the West Ham side who beat Blackpool to secure Premier League promotion at the first attempt.
And just 12 months ago O’Neil was sent off in a QPR shirt for a professional foul on Derby’s Johnny Russel in the play off final at Wembley. Luckily another former Hammer Bobby Zamora saved his blushes by scoring the winner to ensure promotion for QPR.
O’Neil said: “I’ve never lost at Wembley, and I don’t imagine it’s great to go home as a loser – hopefully I’m not about to find out.
“With West Ham, we went there as favourites and just about managed to get over the line.
“Last year we were just about the underdogs because Derby had been going so well, and they had an extra man in midfield so they were always going to dominate possession.
“There was a lot made of my sending-off at the time, but it was a tackle I felt I had to make. Obviously it resulted in a red card, so hopefully there will be nothing like that this year.
I always liked Gary O’Neil, perhaps not the most gifted player but he always gave his best so good luck to him today
