Freiburg respect required

West Ham United
head to Germany this week to face SC Freiburg in the Europa League round of 16, rekindling a rivalry established in the group stages. While the initial draw offered the allure of facing European giants like AC Milan or Roma, the Hammers ultimately face a familiar foe but for all that respect will be required.
West Ham comfortably defeated Freiburg home and away in the group stages, and will now enjoy the backing of their traveling fans in Germany, something they lacked in the previous encounters due to a UEFA ban.
However, complacency would be unwise. Freiburg’s recent form suggests they pose a significant threat. Their 2-2 draw against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich demonstrates their attacking prowess. While they have conceded their fair share of goals, they haven’t shied away from taking the game to strong opponents.
West Ham can draw confidence from their past victories against Freiburg and the valuable experience gained from those encounters. Nevertheless, Freiburg’s extra day’s rest and current form present a  challenge.
So our Europa League journey resumes against a familiar opponent, but one deserving of respect. The support from the traveling faithful could be the deciding factor in navigating this potentially tricky tie.
