Hammers ‘dead wood’ losses – an analysis

|

West Ham’s efforts to rid themselves of what is often described as ‘dead wood’ will come at a price!

But should they do so, their losses in a Covid 19 market not be as high as many might expect despite the fact we are regularly being told this is a going to be a  ‘flat transfer window.’

Currently – apart from Albian Ajeti – there have been no bids for any of the squad but, with the bulk of business being done towards deadline day, that is no surprise and at this stage not necessarily unduly worrying.

In the meantime, it’s interesting to hazard some sort of guess at what the probably out of favour players could attract given how much we paid for them .

It’s far too hot to get into rows LOL but take a look and give us your opinions.

Masuaku – bought for £6m …likely departure price £5 million

Ajeti –  £8 million … £5 million

Lanzini – £11 million – £13 million

Anderson – £34 million – £25 million

Fredericks – free signing – £7 million

Balbuena – £4 million – £4 million

Yarmolenko – £18 million – £7 million

Total purchase price: £81 million

Possible selling price: £66 million

Loss £15 million

NB: We didn’t include Jack Wilshere as realistically we can see no club ready to pay him the £100k a week wages he currently commands based on  his injury track record.

Why the hell are we not looking to add Cresswell to a swap deal or move Noble off , or wave Wiltshire bye bye , why move off Players who can be of use in the squad. Younger men.

    • I agree never liked noble west ham should get rid of him and few others take out the **** and put in new young strong
Players up the challenge next season

My god Hugh can’t agree on your selling valuations.
    5m for Arthur?
    7m Ryan?
    13m Manu?
    25m Anderson?
IMO only Balbuena and Yarmo may come near your estimates but I would keep Yarmo if we can afford to and offer Jack to Newcastle. .well.they took Carol ..

Difficult Hugh not to appreciate the irony of what we now call “ dead wood” and what has been sold to us over the last couple of seasons as top class international footballers. The mistakes in our transfer strategy and tactics are now coming home to roost big time. I won’t leave Wilshire out because giving him a three year contract with no pay as you play element @ £100,000 a week was virgins imo on criminal negligence. The rest of the players you mention will, if they fetch anything at all, not fetch anything like you suppose. In particular: Lanzini will not bring in £13 million, Anderson will not fetch £25 million and neither Masuaku or Yarmolenko will make your numbers. My honest opinion is that we will actually struggle to sell any of them. If we want to rebuild at the most modest level we need either new investment or to sell Rice. Stark choices, but the result of long -term stupidity.

    • GaryD says:

Agree. None of them will sell. Wilshire should play every non-EPL match until he gets back in form or breaks. Balbuena played awfully in front of the siv but can come off the bench in a pinch. The rest will leave as free transfers, after which the real rebuilding will happen.

Hindsight is wonderful, when we brought these players to the club Your Anderson’s and Yarmolenko’s I think most fans were excited and delighted, and including our last manager as well. The chairman backed the manager (pelle), with his player requests and rightly so, as I understand Sully was reluctant to offer any more than a one year deal for Wilshere for instance, but could only get him to sign on a three year contract, and so backed the managers call there. They really are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
I’m sure the chairman will again back the manager as he goes shopping for his younger hungrier players maybe from the championship, but god forbid if this doesn’t work out and we struggle, I think I can guess where the blame will lay and the flak they will get.

Spot on hammerkip how people dont watch how many goals cresswell has cost us over the last two seasons is delusional . Watch the games he plays in and were targeted down that side. Masu sell nah keep and dont play him at wingback as his useless too but great technically and young .

    • Robert Bass says:

Said before here we would struggle to sell these players. As for stupid, as supporters we were all excited by Anderson, Yarmalenko, Haller at the time even accepting the high wages we had to pay to get them to come. Ok, wheelchair was a massive gamble

  • Good Ole Daze says:

Hi Hugh, I think the sticking point for moving on any of these will be the wages issue. We are probably paying far more than most interested clubs can afford, so while your valuations are reasonable, I could see them depressed further for us to get these off our books. So for me:

Masuaku – £3.5 million (as a midfielder), free (as a defender)
    Ajeti – £4 million
Lanzini – £10 million based on current form – if we have to sell him (thanks for the lovely holiday shot earlier – explains why he’s not using up too much energy on the pitch)
Anderson agree £25 million – could be so good, but maybe not suited for the Prem
    Fredericks – £4 million
Balbuena – £5 million. Why does Moyes want to move him on? He was great last season with Diop – is he unhappy about being on the bench, perhaps?
Yarmalenko – £7 million seems fair, but injuries aside, he’s been OK for us.

As I commented last week, if we have to sell before we can buy, I anticipate a bit of grumbling on here coming up to deadline day. I expect most of the above to be with us next season but we do need a RB, LB and a striker.

  • TommyD says:

Think these estimations might be a bit optimistic in the current market And considering the wages they are on?! Lanzini wont be going anywhere for cash considering his wage and over a year of no form and a serious knee injury. Best we can hope for us a loan with option to buy and hope his form picks up. I like Yarmolenko but considering his huge wage and injury record I think the club would take someone’s hand off if they agreed to just cover his wages. Moyes will be paying the price for serious Mia management for a few years I think.

    • Olexander Voznyak,soccer player from 1966 says:

Yarmolenko is very good player,hi has feeling to get ball,to make goal pass, who broad 4 points on the end of season for West Ham United.Hi safe with team place in EPL.You know, that you can play 90 min.and no score goal. But,you can score goal for 10 min.of play during game. And coach said what?!.You know, mister coach, open your eyes and let him,Yarmolenko,do job

  • Hammerkip says:

Getting tired of it really ..I know your only doing ur job hugh but every time I come on its always about how much money we dont have or have to sell before we buy it all comes back to the owners dont want to spend money in one way or another …we avoid relegation but it’s just doom and gloom …all the clubs are in the same boat but there seems to be active bids from a number of clubs…no forward seems to be on our list wich we have needed for a few seasons now just defenders ..yes we want to be settled but the way it’s going you have to try to be a bit exiting going forward….cant read anymore we dont have any money…load of crap imo….where are they on the rich list again…..they could help with no problem…,,,we still got t.v money and other revenue..I just dont get it …..no doubt we will get the accounts soon .
    ..🙄🙄

    • Well sorry ki[ but that’s how it is I’m afraid. I know I’ll be accused of pumping out propaganda etc but honestly that’s how it is. Having said that I reckon on their track record they will poke some dough in

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Yarmolenko will be worth more if someone wants him, he could also play the second striker role, not sure why considering his quality as a finisher and that he plays the position for Ukraine we haven’t played him there in a 442, Wilshere could maybe be sold back to Bournemouth? I wouldn’t call the players dead wood either, probably mist of them will still be with us when you look at the market although Liam deals might be the order of the day with some ?

  • PAUL GARNER says:

how bad are we when no club come in for the stars in the team ie lanzini and anderson
we can swap hugil for eze and throw in wilshire and fredericks for free
cost us nothing and off the wage bill
if we have to sell to buy all other clubs will have had first pick leaving us to choose the left overs
this year more than any other time is a great opportunity to buy young players cheap and may not get this opportunity again

  • Bryan Tomlinson says:

I question why some decent players are not performing ?
Have Fredericks, Lanzini and Anderson, to name a couple, suffering with lack of enthusiasm or lack of good coaching as we’ve seen all 3 play well in patches.
