Hammers left on the bench

|

Hammers Declan Rice and Jesse Lingard have been left on the England bench this afternoon by Gareth Southgate.

Both were named in the 22-man matchday squad to face Romania at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesborough but have been unused so far with an hour gone.

Gareth named an alternative starting side for the International friendly

England Starting XI: Johnstone, Godfrey, White, Mings, Shaw, Ward-Prowse Phillips, Sancho, Grealish, Rashford & Calvert-Lewin

When the second half kicked off Jordan Henderson replaced Kalvin Phillips.

Rice is expected to regain his starting place when the Euros start for real on 11th June and Lingard is still hoping he can make the squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of this summer’s European Championships, opening the door for Jesse Lingard to fill the remaining place.

The 28-year-old scored nine goals and added a further five assists in just 16 appearances for the Hammers, guiding them to Europa League qualification and earning himself a spot in Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad ahead of Euro 2020.

Update: On 65  minute mark Declan Rice came on with Jesse following on 75 minutes

Declan looked good and Lingard played well but my guess is Ward-Prouse will get the nod.
Henderson looked old and should be dropped. Grealish bossed in the second half and seems to be the real thing.

I thought Jesse did well when he came on, what I have really got to like about him is that he will play the ball forward at every opportunity and even though I was not a huge fan of him joining us in January he has been brilliant for us. I hope he gets in the Euro squad but I am worried that he will not because of the amount of forward players. In a way he deserves to be there probably more than the other 6, for me Greenwood, Ramsdale and Watkins will not be going and after today I would not bring Godfrey. For me it is between Jesse, White and Ward Prowse.
