Hammers make late swoop for young striker

|

West Ham is thought to have opened talks about signing Switzerland centre-forward Albian Ajeti.

The Hammers are reported to working on a late deal to sign the 22-year-old from his club Basel before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Basel is said to only interested in a permanent move for their forward who they value at over £8.5million but an agreement between the clubs is some considerable way off. West Ham is thought to only value the player around £4.5m mark and are thought to have put in an initial lower bid for that amount but the Swiss club is insisting they want double that amount.

The Hammers have a limited transfer budget that might not stretch above £5m so they could look elsewhere for young strikers around the £5m mark.

Ajeti scored 21 goals in 43 matches for Basel last season and has an impressive record of a goal nearly every two games for his club, with 96 appearances yielding 43 goals and 21 assists. West Brom and Slaven Bilic failed to agree on personal terms with Ajeti claiming excessive wage demands.

Impressive record in Switzerland but wonder how he’d get on against 50m+ Defenders if only rated at 4m!?!

  • johnham1 says:

Not for me, will add very little to us, not powerful enough for the PL. We should be aiming to buy better than this even with a limited budget. Perhaps we are saving our money for a top midfielder with legs, that must be it !!

    • irish hammer says:

Jesus we could sign Messi Ronaldo and Mbappe for a quid a piece and you would still would find something to moan about. As a club we are steadily improving the quality of the team/squad sure they are areas we need to work on but to be fair to Pelle all the players he has signed are improvements to what we had.Very unlucky with long term injuries last year but all those players have been improving with each preseason game.Try being positive for a change you might enjoy it

  • Hammers64 says:

Seems odd that so little is left in the pot considering the club’s revenue from last season, plus about 12 players sold or released or loaned which has cut the wage bill considerably?.

    • Peter Elliott says:

Totally agree it doesn’t add up are net spend of around 20 million where’s all the money gone ??? You have to love the next level at the bowl

    • Chrysanthos Ladomatos says:

All the money gone towards diff.brands of knickers. No other explaination

    • Lloyd says:

Alot of the players we brought last year, the second payment we have to pay now, we have still spent 70mil I know we got a bit for Arnie, but can’t spend big every year, might be time to give some of the youth a chance

    • Hammerkip says:

I k now 64 it’s ridiculous the way we are supposedly investing is really really poor especially for a club that wants the so called next level..the teams around us have done a lot better ..if I’m honest al! These people who are getting over excited about the coming season I think will have a bit of a shock..hope I’m wrong but we will see ..and if it does go pair shaped all he’ll we break loose and the excuses that were used last year just won’t wash..I think m.p has realised a little to late that squad isn’t strong enough

  • johnham1 says:

Silva is a better player than this guy.

    • Danny B says:

What are you basing that off? Silva has scored 1 goal in 26 games in senior football. This kid has 43 in 96 …

Not saying he’s a world beater but at least give him a chance before you slag him off.

  • Dom says:

I think 8m sounds cheap for a 22 year old with a decent amount of experience who scored 1 in 2 last season. OK the Swiss league may not be one of the top leagues in the world but Basel play European football, he will have played at a good level. Sounds like punt money to me albeit not my money.

  • Max Willow says:

Could be a surprise ‘dark horse’ in a squad in need of additional fire-power up front. Definitely worth consideration!

  • Max Willow says:

Definitely worth a try given the need for additional strikers..

  • Brett Hopson says:

I agree Dom, even though he’s only played in Switzerland he still knows where the net is and £8m doesn’t get you a lot these days except maybe Hugill! Worth a punt and a good age, a little controversial but I’d take Jansen from the spuds, he’s always hadn’t a great goal scoring record just not had much of a chance yet?

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

If rumours are true Brentford are trying to sign him as a replacement for Maupay who they are probably going to sell, so their might be a game being played by us in order to do a deal for Maupay?

  • John Burman says:

Get Wellbeck in for free good back up player can score goals. No fee so pay him decent wages

  • Kenny Irons says:

We’ll always be a two bob team with Gold & Sully in charge.
We’ve done nowhere near enough this Summer to improve – where’s the CDM we desperately need, the left back ? should have got Cahill in at CB as we’re all over the place and need an experienced leader / organiser.
Roll up the opposition and take pot shots at our goal like last season – Fabianski must be having nightmares !!

    • irish hammer says:

I just dont get the constant moaning out of some fans we could sign the 22 best players in the world and some of you would still be whinging.Gold and Sullivan have in the last 2 windows backed Pelle more than they backed anyone else .We are nearly rid of all the bad buys stretching back to Big Sam giving Andy sicknote a 6 year holiday. Pelle is building his team and a team for the future we havent all parts yet but instead of all the bloody whinging enjoy some of the best attackers our club has ever seen.with a bit of luck on the injury side God knows we are due some we could be looking at a big season regardless of the opening result. So get behind the Irons and enjoy instead of always moaning

      • Danny B says:

        Couldn’t agree more Irish!

Owners have done all they could in the last 2 summers; They’ve piped down in the media, spent big on top players (Anderson, Fornals, Haller, Diop, etc), winning the legal battles in regards to the stadium, and so on. Bout time we gave them a chance and actually started getting behind the boys.

Cahill at CB? Sounds like Fonte all over again – he wasn’t much help at 32. I’ve got faith in Diop and Balbuena to tighten up!
