Hammers to play Lyon in Europa League quarter-finals

|

West Ham will face French club Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The Ligue 1 side defeated Porto 2-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 but they have been in mixed form in Ligue 1, sitting 10th in the table.

They have won just two of their last five league games.

The Hammers, of course, progressed to the last eight after beating Sevilla over two legs, knocking out the most successful team in the competition’s history after extra time.

Andriy Yarmolenko scored the winning goal at the London Stadium in extra time as the Irons won 2-0 and they will now be aiming to head into the last four.

Perhaps the biggest possible game was with Barcelona, but they were drawn with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt instead.

However, if West Ham win their tie, they will take on the winners of Barcelona’s clash with Frankfurt. A trip to the Camp Nou could genuinely be on.

UEFA drew the quarter-final fixtures along with the semi-final fixtures on Friday, so the route to the final in Seville is clear, with the Hammers now just five games from glory.

West Ham will be at home in the first leg, meaning they may need to win away in France to progress to the last four.

The first leg falls on April 7th, with the second leg in France coming a week later on the 14th.
