How Hammers provide opposition nightmares

|

West Ham have scored an astonishing 32 goals from set pieces since David Moyes returned to the London Stadium in 2019.

And it’s a feature of their play which will bring back memories of the great Ron Greenwood who was a master of such situations.

His near post corner routine with Martin Peters arriving late in the box became a a serious feature of our play.

But Moyes and his backroom team have developed various other flag kick routines which are proving just as – if not more effective –  on a more regular basis.

And Aaron Cresswell has been discussing this aspect of the Hammers play which opposition difficult teams are finding so difficult to handle.

Speaking to www.whufc.com he said: “We work on it on a Friday and always spend time on it. The Gaffer, Kevin and Nev take a lot of pride in it and we’ve scored the most set-piece goals of anyone over the last two years.

The work is there and we’ve had some fantastic results off the back of them. It always helps when you have got Daws, Angelo, Kurt, Issa, Tomas, Mick… as you’ve got so many people to aim for and as a defender it’s your worst nightmare and not what you wanting to be marking against!”

Hopefully the same scenarios will help see off Wolves on Saturday – a game of critical importance at this stage of things.

That’s followed by Manchester City away and Dinamo Zagreb but given our form on the road there ois no serious anxiety among the squad.

And Cress said: “The stats say that. We are eleven games unbeaten away from home going back to last season and obviously everywhere we’ve gone we’ve had a game plan.

If you look at some of our recent away games, the ones which stand are Everton away in the Premier League, Man United in the Carabao Cup and Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

In previous years, we might have gone 1-0 down and then the game was all but over, but we’re a different team since the Gaffer came in. We have a ‘never say die’ attitude and got some fantastic results.”
