How we rated the Irons at Brighton

|

Hugh hands out his marks

Fabianski: Several important saves but no chance with the one that mattered. Decent 90 minutes 7+

Coufal: Like the rest of them, not fully effective offensively but always reliable at the back 7

Dawson: Had one great chance from a Benrahma cross but headed narrowly wide. Played his part at the back 7

Ogbonna: Like his partner at the back some important blocks and interventions 7

Cresswell: In what was a nothing game he tried hard enough but made little happen  going forward 6

Rice: His return showed us exactly what we had been missing – some great anticipation at times and forever finding decent passes 7+

Soucek; Like the rest of them a pretty average evening but got forward a lot more with Rice’s return 6+

Fornals: Always getting into threatening penalty box positions and a real workaholic of a player 8

Bowen:Played his heart out as always but simply couldn’t break down some stubborn defencing 7

Lingard: After such a fabulous start to his loan period the guy has faded a bit — tried his hardest but some misplaced passes  often found him out 6

Antonio: Struggled against a massed defence but at least the 30 looks fully fit again 6

Subs

Benrahma: Always active and grabbed that vital equaliser and his first goal for the club – we may see a different player now 6+

It seems we try to make absolutely everything go though Lingard. His passing today was really poor (but what a loan signing he’s been!).. We played better when shifting him to the right and Benrahma though the middle, that cought the tight Brighton players off guard. I almost wish Brighton had scored early today as that’s when we switched on. Been a great season, fatigue and having to defend league position seems to have hit us.

When Moyes wakes up and realises how good benrahma is and not make him into a workhorse like most of his players he likes to do then maybe giving the guy match starts not 15mins were become a decent attacking side. As a defensive coach I doubt that will happen! Good job di canio isn’t with this squad otherwise Moyes would have him on the bench and give him the last 15mins each game. Give Moyes 1yr only contract and let’s get in bielsa at all costs and get the west ham way playing like we did against Burnley and could have been 6-3 . Anyone ask why he was out of work for so long ? Allardyce mark 2 not for me but let’s give him his chance with some cash next season

  • Simon M says:

Sorry Mr Administrator. Thank you for your generous ratings of the West Ham players.
But franckly, I think the whole team look very lethargic, like their season is done. The brighter of the 2 teams was Brighton, thus their serious strikes on our goal, and the good Danny W goal too.

•- Cresswell was beaten umpteen times and with ease in the 2nd half. No help from Fornals?
•- Fornals should have scored 4 goals tonight?
•- Which of the 2 centre-backs will take responsibility for another similar goal as the Everton one?
•- Antonio and Bowen did ball watching most of the match. Why they did not take a seat on the stand is baffling. Antonio’s decision to disappear to the left wing, and leave Jesse to do the pressing and defending is becoming a regular behaviour. We then defend with 9 players.
•- Fornals and Bowens non-ability to cross accurately is very frustrating. What’s the point in playing the ball to them?
•- And yes the shine has come of Jesse. So sad.
☆ Glad for Said B’s performance and goal, and Oggie’s return. And hope for Dawson’s waking up now.

Nonetheless, seems the manager and players are satisfied with the position and points to date, and are playing just to get the games done. So sadly, why worry?

    Dissapointed again !

    • Billy says:

      Absolutely right, well spoken,

    • Razorwine says:

Spot on Simon good post and I really think we got to start looking at thr truth . As for cresswell useless defending most goals against are due to his defensive inability good crosser but let’s crosses all the time come into our box . Been that way for a long time masu also useless at defending we need a coufal at left back asp.

  • Joe Harvey says:

Cannot agree with an 8 for Fornals. yes he has tremendous workrate. But so do dozens if other Premier League players. Its not enough especially wen you’re in the higher reaches of the division trying for a European place. The nearer he gets to the goal the worse he gets. Moyes has complained about decision making and final ball. Well Fornals demonstrates that point precisely. And what on earth was that back flick about? I like him but he’s very frustrating at times. I’ll give him a 6. The end product is missing. He personifies what seperates the men from the boys.

  • GaryD says:

Think the defence played really well against a team that were having a friendly. The offence was awful other than Fornals. I would have replaced Bowen at the half. Antonio passed as often to them as to us.
    Two to go.

  • Extraordinary generous Mark’s for such a dire performance.
    Fabianski 6
    Coufal 6
    Cresswell 5
    Ogbonna 7
    Dawson 8
    Rice 7
    Soùcek 6
    Lingard 5
    Bowen 5
    Fornals 3
    Antonio 1
    Benrahma 8

  • Stephen Allen says:

Think we played pretty well overall, had a fair amount of the ball but the decision making and the final pass were again sloppy. Some players don’t look as if they’re too concerned though when they loose the ball and there are too many predictable balls being sprayed about. It needs someone to put their foot on the ball before laying off a telling pass. There’s too much one touch football as if the balls a hot potato. Too much going backwards 20 or 30 yards rather than 10 yards forward. You can’t hurt the opposition knocking it about in midfield trying to find a gap. Brighton though seem to have a PL Curse over us.Anyway we’ve had a good season so no complaints there. The big question is can we go again next season and carry on the good work as we rarely have two good seasons on the trot.

  • Treaders says:

Not sure how Bowen scores higher than benrahma? No end product from Bowen again. Benrahma Scores a good goal and a beautiful cross that Dawson should have hit the target with. Bowen poor and not close to early season form. Overall our last decision in attack was very poor and was the difference to 6 weeks ago when we would have scored 3 or more with the break away chances we had. Badly missing masuaku as we look so much better as a 3/5 at the back, it allows formals, lingard, benrahma to operate through the centre where they are best. I would give Fredericks a go at left wing back. In the games he has played recently has done really well, after I thought his wh career was over.
