How we rated the Irons v Saints

|

Hughie hands out his marks

Fabianski: Two or three remarkable stops – what a keeper this guy is for us at £7 million 8

Antonio: Some hairy moments at right back following illness to Zaba but incredible strength and power on the break to set up the second goal. Terrific performance going forward 8

Ogbonna: Did well in Balbuena’s absence – never really troubled 7

Diop: Excellent performance – always on top of his forwards 8

Cresswell: Skipper for the night and nothing flash – just a solid seven performance 7

Obiang: Nothing outstanding but did the job required of him 6

Rice: Never put a foot wrong – his game awareness is quite extraordinary 8

Diangana: Tried for his life but not a lot came off for the kid 5

Snodgrass: Another fine performance – so much went through him. Key player

Anderson: Great second half performance, great goals, but you know what there is more to come. Sure of it 9

Perez: Missed a sitter and rarely showed – not good 4

Subs

Carroll: Announced his arrival with a reckless challenge which was bad enough to see him off. Lots of energy after that but not much impact 5

Noble: Late arrival and never really got into it in a big way No rating

Masuaku: Extra time arrival. Nothing to say No rating

I agree with the ratings, except to say that Anderson looked out of it in the 1st half, only to show top draw in the 2nd.
My MoM : Declan Rice – just superb, a masterclass in the art of midfield

First half was dire. Second half = the Felipe Anderson show.

It pains me to have to say this but Andy Carroll was truly embarrassing. The team couldn’t play with him in it so they just by-passed him. But then I’m sure his presence occupied the Saints defenders to allow Anderson those easy goals.

Obiang a 6? not in my book, but as we all know football is subjective, great win and an exciting game.

Good to hear Pellegrini’s Claret and Blue Army being sung after only half a season… fully deserved.

    Happy New Year Hugh

I thought Obiang was good and Carroll put himself about, Perez did struggle to get involved but I think he will get better the more game time he gets, Diangana did ok he is finding there is a big difference between u23 level and PL. I thought it was an excellent performance against a very competitive side, Ings was a constant thorn in the side and Targett had a great game for them, after Redmond pushed the ball in our net I was pretty worried but luckilly it pushed Anderson into a higher gear and we got the win our play deserved, onwards and upwards COYI !!!
