Kalvin Phillips’s time at West Ham has come to an abrupt end after a horrendous loan spell. Whilst it’s harsh to call him the Hammers’ worst ever signing, his horror stint certainly cost the club significantly without yielding returns.

The midfielder played his final game for West Ham due to a calf injury that prematurely ended his season. He missed last weekend’s 5-0 loss to Chelsea and hasn’t recovered in time for the final home game against Luton, which will also mark David Moyes’s last at the London Stadium.

Even if he regains fitness, Phillips is ineligible to face his parent club, Manchester City, in the final game next weekend. He’s expected to return to the Etihad early next week to continue rehabilitation as he faces an uncertain summer.

Initially, both clubs had considered an option to buy as part of the loan deal, but they couldn’t agree on the terms. As a result, Phillips leaves West Ham with just three starts across all competitions since his arrival in January.

The 28-year-old had joined West Ham mid-season seeking regular playing time to secure his spot in the England squad ahead of the European Championship. However, his underwhelming four-month stint with the Hammers has left him out of Gareth Southgate’s plans.

Phillips is expected to join former club Leeds United next season.
