Loony Tunes season gets underway

|

It’s clear that Loony Tunes time is well and truly upon us again  – the briefest glance across the forums tells you so.

The manager who last season was responsible for a top ten finish and bringing some much needed stability is suddenly “useless, past his sell by date, just picking up his pension, clueless” and apparently has “lost the dressing room.”

There’s just five comments I have picked up from the many before deciding an afternoon in front of the box was preferable to reading such stuff.

And of course in many cases it’s the board’s fault really for appointing an old man who “has no Plan B” and is nothing more than “a joke.” Don’t remember hearing that in the summer and through August and September.

Apparently – according to some – we can’t afford to sack him and “we can’t afford not to.” The calls for Moyes are being heard again and the board should resign.

That’s football for you: One minute the flavour of the month, the next all the old weary reasons are raised which didn’t work before and won’t next time. If it had every team would be challenging for the title.

The screams and yells to sack everybody associated with the running and management of the club emerge from rage and frustration – and it’s from such emotions the worst decisions are usually made.

Personally I’m looking to the return of Michail Antonio as one key to the rest of the season and whilst we are all oppressed by our present worries and concerns I remain convinced Pellegrini has more than enough nous to avoid a relegation battle.

Yep a decent moan up relieves frustration but there really are no simple answers and I think it might be a good idea to accept that!

The immediate fixture list reads like this: Burnley (a), Spuds (home), Chelsea (away), Arsenal (home), Southampton (away) and Palace (away).

Not encouraging but my forecast is eight points from a possible 18.

  • Given the teams we are coming up against I see Burnley 0 points Spurs 1 point Chelsea 0 points Arsenal 1 point Saints and Palace 0 points.

How I wish we had Brendan Rodgers . Leicester are streets ahead of us . Better commitment, far better coached , strong , fast . Everything we’re not . Their fans must be truly proud of their team . We are just a shambles as ever .

  • MATT HAMMER 74 says:

If only we had a manager like Brendan Rodgers . Leicester are everything we dream of . Committed ,well coached, strong , quick , deadly and humble too. We are a shambles from the board , manager and the players . How proud those Leicester fans must be of a real team . How jealous I am .

I wanted Moyes to be given a fair crack of the whip – supporters had a pop cos he wasn’t playing the West Ham way – I’ve supported since late 60’s and the West Ham way never existed – getting beaten often, did !
We were 18th when Moyes took over and he saved us from relegation for sure, by competing and showing some muck and bullets to get us out of the mire by picking up points.
Defeat at Burnley and Pelle’ has to go- and it will be, because they will get in our faces and we’ll go missing again as we always do.
Oh, and 10th last season was lucky – if it hadn’t been for Fabianski saving us on multiple occasions would have been relegation fight.
If he stays, he should be looking up the way to Reading !
    👎👎👎

I hope that Pelle gets it right – but it is ironic that we are depending on Antonio to save him as at the beginning of this season Pelle didn’t think he was worth a starting place – while we did well last season I feel that we were lucky in some games – Huddersfield at home, Fulham at home (where our equalizer would have been chalked off for handball this year), Watford away (when they were unlucky to have a player sent off and had the FA cup final as a distraction) – and overall our away form over the last half of the season was woeful. Perhaps we are over reacting to the current bad run – but perhaps we also are ignoring some of the warning signs from last season (getting over-run in midfield e.g. Cardiff away, slow starts etc)

Now is the time for Pelle to prove to us WestHam fans that he is still a top manager

It would be terrible if teh only thing keeping him in a job is that we are unable to pay teh settlement! Let him be there because he deserves it – I dont think that is really Loony Tunes

  • Tom says:

Not just Antonio, Hugh. The biggest loss by a mile is Fabianski. It has completely changed the dynamic of our team. Our once confident defenders are now panicking, and that fool Roberto has made more errors in 3 games than Fabianski did in an entire season. Keepers are just as important as strikers and that would suggest why the top teams are all splashing out on their no.1s now. This Roberto is absolutely no where near premier league quality. What was he doing for the 2nd goal yesterday, the 3rd on the free kick? The everton opener, the Sheffield equaliser? All of these would be saved by Fab and we would arguably be 6 points better off now if he were playing. I think he is worth 15-20 points a season.

  • Chris says:

Always thought Pelle lacks somewhat when things aren’t going well. From putting his head in his hands against Wimbledon to his strange squad selections after a poor result. He’s getting paid a top 6 salary and doesn’t look like he can deliver on it. The net spend was of course bottom half…… I’m guessing. This might be due to other clubs over extending themselves? We look one of the three worst teams in the league on current form. Who do you blame?

  • Robert Paul Bass says:

It’s traditional for some West Ham supporters to hate the manager, either straight away or after a short period. Think Moyes, Sam, Bilic. Curbishley. Who would they be be happy with. Our fans are obsessed with this ‘sexy’ football and the mythical ‘West Ham Way’ I think this has led to a number of ‘fancy dans’ coming in,not prepared to role their sleeves up. If we do have to fight our way out of trouble, are some of them up for it?
What has surprised me a bit is Pellegrini has started to look a bit lost, is he a manager that copes when things are not going well. If he is unsure of what is going wrong, I might suggest despite the love for Declan Rice, the CM partnership with Noble is not strong enough especially against pacy midfields. Problem is, where are the players to come in

  • LJ says:

Remember Bilic last few games brighton 0-3 and Liverpool 1-4 both at home. Yesterday felt just like that .clueless from the bench and shambles on the pitch.something has to change next few games or they have to act .say it’s 5-7 million ? to pay up contract That’s nothing in premier football these days so that can’t be an excuse…..But saying that I have no idea who would come in 🙄🙄

  • Hammers64 says:

To be honest a lot of us wanted Moyes the be given a contract.Certainly more in the way
of motivational skills and giving youngsters a chance. All the players brought in are from leagues abroad and we all know it takes a hell of a long time to get up to pace if at all..Zaza and Calleri never settled as an example. Can you honestly hand on heart see where the next point is coming from?

  • Peter bendall says:

No pace and no creativity . Quality midfield players in their later years let others do the running and provide killer passes . Noble never was a quality player just getting by with 110 % effort and being home grown . Now he and Zab are geriatic dinasours offering nothing to the team . I would rather see young blood running and giving their all rather than two old men making fools of them selves and contributing nothing .

  • S.A Hanner says:

Terrible headline Hugh and disrespectful to the hammers fans who clearly just showing some frustration.

  • Paul Lewis says:

Sorry Hugh, but I have always said Pelle was the wrong appointment from day one.
He was always just using us as a pension cheque, as where is his ambition for the future?
He is clueless, and to say he doesn’t know whats wrong, how ridiculous is that?
You say wait until Antonio returns, he is always injured mate, just look at his record over the past few seasons.
Get your head out of the sand, Pelle should go now and bring in a younger manager with drive. £8m salary should get you the best in the world as near as.

  • John says:

It tells you everything when the author of this article states that he ‘remains convinced that Pellegrini has more than enough nous to avoid a relegation battle’.
After spending a significant amount since Pellegrini’s arrival, it is safe to say that there has been no significant improvement and we are still talking about avoiding relegation. Whilst I accept that we will never be challenging for the Premier League, what I can’t accept is how easily we surrender in cup competitions. Since Pellegrini arrived we have been thrashed by lower league opposition in two cup competitions, conceding 4 goals to both Wimbledon and Oxford. Recent performances have been shocking and embarrassing. Against Everton there was no desire or effort even though they were on a poor run of form. Then just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I witnessed one of the worst performances against Newcastle from a West Ham team that I have supported over 50 years. So am I pleased with what the manager has achieved so far? No. His team selection and substitutions are very questionable at times and his tactical nous/awareness is often poor. The basic job of a football manager is to select the team, decide tactics and maintain team morale to ensure the team implements his tactics, which should include application, effort and professionalism. For a so-called ‘world class’ manager, I will leave you to decide if Pellegrini has performed well.

  • Welsh Tony says:

I drove over 500 miles (roind trip) to watch that clueless display. Players werent moving into space, there was no creativity, and a general lack of confidence in all moves. We were promised European football next season.

  • PopRobson says:

Sorry Hugh, but you’ve got it as wrong as a Pellegrini starting line up with this headline and article.
There’s very little to defend from our last few performances and as we seem to only want to use the same players over and over again that has to be down to the manager. Insiped, uninspired, slow and thats just the good points,

  • Saul says:

As an avid reader of this website but, until now, a zero contributor (apologies for that!), i feel it’s time to say to all of the West Ham fans that read and post on here; we need to keep supporting the team and the manager through this tricky patch. Football fans are fickle. They love the team when results are going well and then turn on them when things aren’t to their liking. When we beat Utd everyone was saying how Pelle was changing things at West Ham, how top 6 was a realistic target and top 4 a not-too-distant dream. A few bad performances later (for bad, read horrendous) and he’s for the chop. Utter nonsense. I admit i haven’t seen us play well once this season, even in beating Utd and, as Tom above stated, Fabianski’s injury is what’s really costing us as Roberto has been at fault for 4 goals in the last 3 games (ok, he’s saved a few too but that’s his job) but Pelle has a history of success at clubs not to dissimilar to ours and i trust him to turn it around. We have no experience of managing a top football club. He does. So for all the fans ranting and raving about replacing him, i say get a grip. Klopp didn’t turn Liverpool into what they are now overnight, ditto Ferguson all those years ago. It takes time. So have some patience and realise a toxic fan base is actually detrimental to a team. Sorry for the soliloquy!
