Mateus Fernandes ranked as a solidly above‑average Premier League midfielder in 2025/26, especially in playmaking, progression, and defensive work, while his shooting and goal output were mid‑table among midfielders.
His stats showed that he was one of the better playmaking midfielders in the league (top 20–25%), a reliable defensive contributor (top 30–40%), though a modest shooter and goal threat (mid‑table).
Overall, a well‑rounded, above‑average Premier League midfielder with standout progression and expected assists numbers.
As such suggestions that Manchester United are exploring a deal well short of West Ham’s valuation, reminds me of Tom, played by actor, Jason Flemyng’s infamous quote in the 90’s classic Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and one can imagine him saying,
“It’s a deal. It’s a steal. It’s the sale of the bloody century. But £50 million? What school of finance did you study? For a lad we nabbed for £42m. Actually, sod it, at that price, I think we’ll keep him!”
Relegation or not, the club should be telling suitors:
“You gotta know when to hold ’em, and you gotta know when to fold ’em. But this one? This one’s a bargain, mate.”
And with interest reportedly coming from several top clubs including PSG the board would be wise to remind them:
“Too late, too late will be the cry when the man with bargains has passed you by.”
It is widely expected the player will leave this summer, yet only at the right price and with a contract running until 2030 and no relegation clause, the message to potential buyers is simple:
Put up or shut up!
For me there are a few players we must keep (somehow). Hermandse, Mavropanos, Fernandes, Summerville and Tati. Go all out to keep these and sell the rest if good offers come in. We must be able to get something for the dregs. Also Kilman is a free hit. We’re going to get nothing for him so it might be worth loaning out or testing his confidence and bravery in the Championship
50 million is the correct call. They are in np postion after been relegated. And he is a oke midfielder not great. Not much better then Argarta
22yo, plays internationally for a spot in the best midfield in world football, best young prospect in his position in the Prem last season. He’s a steal at £80m. Get the chequebook out Carrick or we’ll keep him, this lads value is only going one way.
Just tell Man U to feck off unless you show us £85 million, but this is Sullivan doing the negotiating and look at how he dealt with the Kudus sale
Let’s not let the so called big clubs take the Mickey
He is worth 80millon plus or forget it
We need to get us out of this debt, it is pointless letting players leave for peanuts and then get a points deduction because we did not get enough money for psr rules.
Sullivan even you should be able to stand firm on this one
If there is one player we should keep it’s Fernandes but we won’t, he was better than Mavropanos across the season and should have been hammer of the year.
As for selling him if Caicedo was over £100m this lad is better than him and Rice at the same age.
So if we have to sell go as high as possible, what the team is lacking is raw pace, so whoever we buy that should be a necessity.
The club could replace a lot of slow players for pacey ones, hopefully we get the Swansea lad who knows where the goal is, Pablo will likely be a lot more useful in this league but pace is not something he has, maybe call up Ajala, If Fernandes goes Orford could be good if Bowen goes maybe Preston Fearon and Kante is pretty useful.
Am curious to see what Nuno can do with a full preseason and what the team will look like.
If we can get rid of Sullivan as the main shareholder and decision maker that would also be a bonus.
Exactly Matt, you want him you pay what we want or you don’t get him. About time we played hard ball like other clubs play with us
We played hardball with Manure when we got Obi Wan-Bissaka for a steal, reportedly £15 mill. He’s not been so great for us lately but he was very good indeed for quite a while.
