Moyes can earn right to reshape West Ham

|

I’ve had weak moments like the rest of us believing the worst and hoping for the best but – and I am being honest – I’ve never truly believed we will go down.

My faith in David Moyes has swung from strong to weak – that’s football…a match by match excursion into darkness and light. Quite why we put ourselves through it all is a mystery until days like today come along!

I do not believe Watford and/ or Aston Villa will come to the London Stadium and turn us over and that will mean as near 100 per cent as it gets at this stage – if it ain’t already – that we will be a Premier League club next season.

And assuming a vaccine or medicines have been developed to reduce the threat of Covid 19 wrecking the 20/21 season we could all be gathering again for what could and should be a much needed season of change and organisation at West Ham United.

That it could happen under David Moyes is one of those wicked ironies that only football – it seems – can throw at us.

For the redirection of this club was supposed to happen under the bloke who replaced him and had more money thrown at him than any in our history.

Now Moyes – a guy abused by many, liked by a lot – looks to be the manager who hopefully will be handed full control of all football matters by the board.

Some will blame the board for the Pellegrini/Husillos disaster after they  given more control and money than any manager ever employed by the joint chairmen.

Should – as we believe – the Hammers stay up David Moyes has earned the right to exactly the same treatment and to demand and get total responsibility for all football matters.

He will have more than earned that right!

We need to see the same situation as existed at Everton when he was doing exactly that and chairman Bill Kenwright signed the cheques. It was a hugely effective relationship for them and the club.

And that’s the way it works – football people run football affairs; the businessmen and owners – whilst having an obvious right to say yes or no where there money is concerned – supply the finances.

Moyes will no doubt want to set up a scouting system and ensure that he looks at every player brought to his attention which is just as it should be – agent activity should be reduced considerably.

Assuming – and it’s now more than reasonable to expect us to be in the PL -this manager has to be handed the opportunity to put the club on the footing which we had hoped and expected before the Pellegrini disaster.

We have a real chance and next season could be extremely exciting if it’s allowed to happen. Slowly and baby step by baby step Moyes is heading in that direction.

Hell no that can not happen. Tactical dinosaur. He set west ham up today not to lose. Jesus wept. It’s bloody Norwich not Liverpool or Man. City away. The man just breeds negatively.

  • EssBeeMUC says:

As I have said before, if Moyes had been kept on, I honestly believe we wouldn’t have been in a relegation battle this season.
If we had stood by Pellegrini, we would have already been relegated along with Norwich. His football philosophy isn’t far removed from Farke’s.
As for Moyes getting a lot of verbal sh*t from fans, he’s a Premiership manager! He did a great job at Everton, and Sunderland and Man Utd were poison chalices. Can these gob****es do any better?!?
At the start of the season I was optimistic of a season where we won more than we lost as we splashed the cash.
Assuming we stay up, I hope Moyes gets similar cash and delivers that next season.

  • Alan says:

    Agree 100% with this!

    • Saul says:

I fear, Hugh, that one strong performance, against a very poor team, has swung your opinion on Moyes. I shared your disappointment at his signing, shared your belief Pellegrini was the man to take us forward and have shared your disdain for Moyes over recent months. I don’t share your opinion of him being the man to lead us forward. HOWEVER… I do think we need him next season to steady the ship. Anything other than a relegation battle will be progress.

Is he our long term future? If that means Premier League stability then yes. If it means challenging for any kind of European place, sadly I think he is too old school. I’d love to be proven wrong though

  • Jegsie says:

I couldn’t agree more. I’d be excited to see what Moyes could do with a couple of transfer windows And the kind of money given to pellegrini. However, I don’t think the Dave’s will cough up anywhere near as much dough for Moyes. Luckily though Moyes is the kind of manager who can make his transfer kitty go a long way. He’s already demonstrated that with the superb signings of Souchek and Bowen.

  • Jamie says:

Need sporting director… more than 3 scouts maybe not bring in moyes son to do that job lol…

  • Pacific Claret says:

Let’s look at how successful clubs do it. Sevilla FC, winner of five Europa League trophies, has a Director of Football who chooses the Manager, oversees the scouting system, and provides a consistent football philosophy from year to year.
If the Manager leaves for a bigger club (it has happened to them several times as they got more successful), nothing changes. Same football philosophy, same values, same priorities. A new manager is chosen who fits in the club. The club does not adapt to the Manager. The Manager has to have the priorities and skills the club wants.

If West Ham does not get that continuity from year to year under a proven Director of Football who has managed a top club, we will continue swerving right and left as Managers come and go. I like Moyes, but his track record after Everton was not exactly spectacular. What kind of club do we want to be in 5 years? The answer will determine the kind of management structure we should build in the club.

  • Bell says:

Who was it Moyes bought from Preston the last time around? Is he still on the books?

    • Alan says:

Anyone who thinks every signing will be a success is deluded. I’ll take 2 out of every 3 any day of the week, Bowen & Soucek.

    • Steve Elson says:

I totally agree with the above statements!!!
A tactical dinosaur!! Players were absolutely knackered against Burnley and didn’t try to even draw.
I actually thought he might do well for us, but I have changed my view.
Bring in Dyche or someone of his calibre!!

      • Maybe u need to check Burnley’s results since returning

      • Alan says:

Didn’t try to draw against Burnley???
        What???

We had by far the most clear cut chances but just couldn’t score on the day, this is football sometimes. How is that possibly down to the manager?

      • Lyonzee says:

You cannot be serious, the difference between the Norwich and Burnley games was the fact we managed to put away a few of the many chances we created and an inspired performance from their keeper Pope, I thought they were two very similar performances with different outcomes but hey that’s football

    • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

Jordan Hugill, who has done okay this season at QPR. Given a choice right now, I’d gladly have him as backup than Ajeti and, based on recent performances, Haller! What Antonio, Rice and Bowen demonstrate is that you can get a long way with grit and determination, instead of inflated egos. I’d like us to continue with these types of players – Fornals and Soucek have been great too – and say ‘thanks and goodbye’ to lazy players who are consumed by their own self importance.

  • Dave says:

If he fails to beat Watford he will have 1 win against a non relegated team, and potentially only 3 wins in charge and only 2 clean sheets… adding to which it appears he has completely lost the faith of all of the non british players. Its more likely the game has moved on from his successful Everton days and he is not suited to managing a modern squad, as seen by his tactics and refusal to sub. With only 12 months on his contract he won’t be given any control especially as the overhaul required to build a young British based squad like he’d want would be too big of a risk.
Wish he we’re the answer but I’d feel far worse going into next season if he was in charge.

  • Graham Watts says:

We need stability first and foremost! David Moyes will at least give us that and seems to favour a strong work ethic in players before the fancy stuff.
As for Dyche, his style is son of Allerdyce!
After all the messing about over last three years and fans attitude I don’t think is is a queue of top rate managers wanting to come!

  • MR.PETER BENDALL says:

How many chances does a loser get . He is about as dynamic as a plate of jellied eels . No tactical accumen , no plan b and absolutely no charisma . . Please someone tell me what Moyes has ever won … surely there must be something ? He was set up as the fool guy at Man U as the job was impossible . . Perhaps it has to be someone like him …. desperate , cheap and almost unemployable , to work with the board but all he will do is lead us down not up .. Another nail in the coffin of our once proud club . COYI

    • Alan says:

Who do you want in charge?

Lots of criticising but not many suggestions! I’m guessing you foretold the downfall of Bilic and Pellegrini too.

Typical West Ham “genius with hindsight” fan.

      • ljd1980 says:

Spot on. In the Premier League era, David Moyes has won exactly the same number of trophies as West Ham. Zero. People need to get realistic, and remember that he completely transformed Everton (who were perennially at the wrong end of the table after Howard Kendall left). People also need to deal with the likelihood that a lot managers out there may not want to work with GSB.

  • Kevin says:

First there were calls for Eddie Howe to replace Moyes . Haven’t seen any shouts for a while now . Then there are shouts for Sean Dyche who’s recent results haven’t exactly set the world alight with his Alladyce style ( the style the fans hated ) and lacking in any real tactical nouse . Or do west ham want to return to scraping out 1 – 0 wins and going on the defensive.
Neither of those two are what West Ham need .
What we need is to continue with Moyes and carry on building .

  • Joe says:

I totally agree, he’s earned a chance to show what he can do with a summers transfers and a full season ahead of him

  • Billy says:

Football is all about opinions particularly amongst us supporters, but it’s the owners opinion that counts, its obvious that Moyes divides opinion, but the owners are convinced, so they need to back him by investing in warriors in the Burnley/ Sheffield Utd mode, maybe not for the purists, buts it’s where we are.

    • Whammer1 says:

Give the guy a chance ffs ..imo he was harshly treated last time around despite doing what he was employed to do ..and with fingers crossed he is about to do the same.
Give the man a chance ffs!!

  • mooro66uk says:

I’m neither for or against Moyes. I’m still undecided but some of the comments on here are ridiculous. He’s criticised for not making subs. Look at our bench and tell me who, most days, would improve the team. Very few, that’s who. We have a bare 14/15 players who could be relied upon to produce Premier league performances. The rest are lazy, disinterested or sub standard. That isn’t Moyes fault.
Other managers use subs even less. Dyche, who many people want to take over from Moyes, is a prime example. Until June 4th Burnley had used 58 subs. West Ham had used 80. Only 5 less than Liverpool, who had used the most.
Everyone has their own preferences but at least use facts for your reasoning.

    • Alan says:

Perfect response to that “He doesn’t use enough subs” nonsense comment Mooro!

  • John says:

Anyone who thinks that David Moyes is our answer is deluded and lives in cuckoo land. His win ratio compares favourably with Avram Grant who, in my opinion, was the worst manager in our entire history. In this spell, his win premier league win ratio is 25% and not a lot better in his first stint with us. Generally, Moyes sets up his teams not to lose rather than putting more emphasis on selecting a team that can win and control games. Whilst we played great and dominated against Norwich, the opposition was very poor. So let’s not get carried away. Our performance against Wolves was shocking and not a lot better v Spurs. I blame Moyes and his coaching team for that. As a manager, his job is to motivate the players, decide the tactics/game plan and then select a team that will play with the passion and desire to carry out those tactics/game plan. He had over 3 months to prepare for the restart and get them ready but failed miserably. As for the comments about lazy and disinterested players, I entirely agree but you have to ask the question whose job is it to make sure they are not lazy and disinterested. Answer – David Moyes. To be successful, you have to be ambitious, take some calculated risks and be prepared to pay for a top manager. The Pellegrini appointment will have burnt the fingers of Gold and Sullivan, but this should not deter them. They MUST go out and get a top manager that will take us to the next level. My choice would be Pochettino. What he did at Spurs was outstanding, culminating in getting them to a Champions League Final and finishing in the top 4 more often than not. That would do for me.

  • Hammerkip says:

I dont mind him if I’m honest…think he deserves a chance

    • Razorwine says:

Credit where due always for me and Moyes if it was his chosen ones sou and Bowen great choices. As for 9mill on hugill that’s a joke like buying Sanchez and Roberto! All managers mistakes and like John above says Moyes has the worst record at west ham along with golds mate grant. For me his not a long term manager here and would love kovac coming in. Moyes remember failed st manure took sunderland down and won ? At everton? Cheap solution by this board and doesnt deserve to be given a long contract . How many clubs went for him after manure ? Hopefully we shall stay up and luckily Antonio is in scintillating form for us . Two full backs and sou paid for with maybe one more striker and a long list of players to leave is needed when this dreadful season is completed.

  • Tom Smith says:

David Moyes is working with a squad largely not of his choosing. Few would argue, I hope, that Bowen and Soucek have seen to be good choices – thus far.
David Moyes has given a clear route map regarding the type of players he wants. Let’s hope he gets that chance – and then see where we go from there.
We are not going to attract a ‘big name’ manager with the present owners still in situ.
What we do need is a plan to take the club forward. And that won’t happen until GSB move on.
For now, let’s give Moyes a chance.
