Moyes: “Finish the job off”

|

David Moyes has told the Hammers to finish the job off in the Group A match when second placed Freiburg are the visitors in a fortnight’s time. The Irons were thoroughly awful in Serbia against Backa Toploa but Tornado Tom Soucek again rescued them with a late late 88th minute volley to keep them at the top of the group. But the real hero was probably Maxwel Cornet who supplied a magnificent cross the our midfielder to hammer home on a night when a few chickens were looking like coming home to roost.

Moyes: Finish the job off

Whilst the Irons were creeping to victory their next opponents, who sit in second place, Freiburg, were hammering Olympiakos by five goals. That ensured the game between the pair in a fortnight at the London Stadium will become a momentous occasion. The Hammers need to avoid defeat to top the group and avoid a two legged play off  in February

And talking at his post match press conference the Hammers boss said: “We’re thrilled at West Ham that we’re going to play in Europe after Christmas time for the third season.

“Playing Freiburg in the last game to win the group is hugely important. But I’d have taken this at the start of the season. If  you’d said we’ll finish second I’d have taken that. Freiburg are a good side and we are going to have to play well.”

And of Soucek Moyes said: “Tomas is in great form, not only for us but for his country as well. In his first season he got 10 goals for us and it’s seven now so he has a chance to reach that figure again.

We made a few changes to the team tonight, some were ill, we were always going to try some other players tonight to give them game time. We scored two late goals on Saturday to beat Burnley and as a manager sometimes it’s good to win game late.”
