Hammers rely on Soucek and luck

Hammers rely on Soucek too much

TSC Backa Topola 0 West Ham 1

I can’t have been the only person who found themselves close to falling asleep during tonight’s Europa Cup win in Serbia.

Granted, I’d had quite a long day and an arduous drive on the M40. However, I’m usually excited to watch West Ham play, but on this occasion, I was bored. I’m aware that David Moyes is under no obligation to entertain on an away trip in Europe, but West Ham were second best once again. Ultimately the result is all that matters, but make no mistake . . . this was a good result and a stinky performance.

Fortunately, Tomas Soucek was the hero once again, but we can’t keep expecting him to rescue us with last-minute winners. While West Ham may have been missing some key players, there was still at least £200m worth of talent on show tonight, and we really shouldn’t have toiled as much as we did.

What chance does Divin Mubama have when he’s isolated up front, surrounded by players who seemingly can’t be bothered? Not all of them, of course; there were a smattering of players who tried, but most looked stale and uninspired.

Ultimately, West Ham got the job done, and for that, I should be grateful. Unfortunately, I can’t say, hand on heart, that we were the better team. Not against Topola, Forest, or Burnley, where we required luck in every instance. The trouble with luck is that it runs out at some point.
