Moyes gives Scamacca fitness update

|

David Moyes has confirmed that Gianluca Scamacca is closing in on a return to fitness after his illness.

We reported earlier this week that the Italy international was on the mend and was nearing full fitness, although it wasn’t exactly clear when he would return.

Moyes has now been asked directly about the former Sassuolo ace, and Moyes has dampened expectations of him making a return in the Europa Conference League clash with FCSB on Thursday.

That means Mikey Antonio may be forced to play twice in a week once again, as he may also be needed against Newcastle this weekend.

Moyes, after all, has confirmed that Scamacca has only recently returned to training and has struggled immensely with his illness across the past week.

As a result, it seems unlikely that he will be rushed back to action at the London Stadium.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the European game, Moyes said, as per Football.London: “He [Scamacca] only really started training so I’m going to work towards him getting back if we can. We hope to get him back but he’s really not been well for ten days so if he’s fully fit I’d be very surprised but certainly he trained today and he’s getting closer to fitness.”
