Moyes: “It’s not completely done yet”

|

David Moyes could hardly have been happier with the win and clean sheet against Leicester City this afternoon declaring: “The win was more than deserved.

He added: “It’s always a good feeling when you win. We have needed to win for a couple of games now and the boys have done that, so we’re really pleased.

“To get a clean sheet and three points is really good, too. These players are capable of winning games. Of course, we have to do this on a more consistent basis, and we probably have to defend better to give ourselves a chance.

He was thrilled with Mark Noble’s amazing goal saying: “I just said to Nobes, Pedro Obiang might have to give you back the Goal of the Season [award] from his goal at Tottenham. But look in all seriousness, Mark is capable of scoring goals and it was really good for us.

“It’s an important goal. We didn’t play as well in the second half or control the game as we had done in the first, but you’d expect Leicester to come back into it. But then we had two or three really great chances on the break to more than wrap it up.”

“It’s not completely done yet, but it will take some doing for the teams below us to get us now. But now I’m actually thinking how many points we can get, where we can finish and thinking about getting close to the mid-half of the table.

“The Premier League has been like that all season and two wins, you’re near the top half.

“We’ll try and win some more points in the final two games to come. We’re in a good place and we can look to move forward.”

It is completely done now!!! Safe after the Southampton draw against Everton!!

    • kevin says:

We have 38 pts . Southampton & Swansea have each got 33 pts . If either one of them win Thier last two games they will have 39 pts . Huddersfield need 4 pts to reach 39 also .
If West Ham lose Thier last two games they will be relegated mathematically .
We need at least ONE MORE POINT . Have I got that right ? .

      • Mary Millingtons Ghost says:

No Kevin, you’ve not got that right.
Swansea and Soton play each other on Tuesday so at least one of them will drop points.

  • hammers64 says:

Yes it is now.Safe mathematically after that late Everton goal.Just hope Swansea can beat Southampton and let that braggard Hughes have the honour of taking 2 teams down in one season.

What a massive relief when that Everton goal went in! Everyone around me is saying “you’ll be fine now”, but you never relax until it’s a mathematical certainty. Never thought I’d celebrate an Everton goal, but there you have it!

Now we can enjoy our last couple of games. Put Cullen in for the United game, push Mario up (as he’s still playing for his future, despite a decent performance today) and rest Lanzini.

Finally we can move on and prepare for next season! I think although there clearly needs to be a lot of movement transfer-wise, we’d be better suited getting a better manager. The talent is there in the squad they just need the right tactics and motivation to play greater than the sum of their parts. The league is too volatile to completely start from scratch.
Burnley have shown big names and international experience is no match for hard work and unity. I don’t see that under Moyes any time soon.
Thankfully we can enjoy the world cup and then the hard work begins

  • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

Disagree. I think we see how Moyes plays in the final two games, now that we’re safe. He has had a job to do. A job he has done under very difficult circumstances. Let’s give him a couple more games before the vultures swoop in for the kill.

    • ahammer says:

Credit where credit is due, it’s an incredible feat for Moyes to have stepped in and kept us up, but I don’t believe we should be sentimental after some of the performances and negative football we’ve had to endure. We need to look to the future before we get caught up in the past with teams like Stoke and West brom with their backward thinking and underperforming.

  • Hammer64 says:

The talent is there in the squad…Really ahammer?? You have better eyesight than me mate 😃😃 This is a thin squad with a lot of injury prone players & quite a few who are well below PL standard.

Agree with you Buddy. Before we leap in & change managers, who are we going to recruit if we give Moyes the bullet. If you can get Rafa on a plate that’s would be fine by me, but he is a crafty old fox & is still seeing if he can screw a hefty transfer budget out of the Magpies. After two woeful seasons there are no big names ( or even many average names) fighting to take over. Rather than change managers again I would go for the radical changes in the administration of the club that have been talked about. Involve Moyes in those changes so that he can change that ‘culture’ of the club that he was talking about. Then back him with a decent budget. Get the main transfers sorted EARLY so that we get a decent pre season for once.

Sounds easy? It won’t be. Some of those changes will only take place if the owners take a good look a thing themselves. If they are rubbing their hands together tonight & saying ‘We blagged it again Dave’ then it will be the same again next season. In my opinion reforming the club should more important than whether Moyes stays or goes. I am in favour of keeping Moyes but I would settle for replacing him with one of the other fan favourites AS LONG AS the owners change. Even if you bring in a big name to this club it will be a disaster if the club does not change.

I agree with your assessment, I think I’m mainly disappointed wiht our level of performance this year when you look at the pedigree of the players we have- players don’t turn from internationals to conference level overnight!
Ogbonna has been good but this is an Italy international. Kouyate is the captain of Senegal- who are going to the world cup, Chicharito is so renowned he caused the hilarious influx of ‘fans’ that are the cause of the only parts of the season that have made me smile. I just think it is undeniable that on paper the standard of our players is above that of most of the teams around us and maybe on par with those above us (i.e leicester burnley everton). Surely we need to find someone like Marco Silva or even an assistant manager (I liked how Klopp refers to his assistnat Buvac by “the brain” of his operation). It’s a risk yeah but staying up having been thrashed 4-1 nearly every other week is hardly progress.

We are safe as Soton & Swansea have to play each other so, both can’t catch us!

  • Hammerkip says:

Now we are safe after this absolute shambles off a season something needs to be done asap at least half the squad need to go plus the owners but I think I I’m hoping to much there …but this club definitely needs a massive overhaul imo but the fact of the matter is it will only happen with investment and I think the 3 amigos have shown already that that won’t happen ..spending 60 mil on players isn’t enough imo so unless something drastic happens I can’t see how these owners can move us forward…they will say the right thing s to get bums on seats again but will they actually do it …???????

  • kevin says:

We are safe … let’s give Moyes some credit for the way we went about our business today at Leicester … certainly kept a few negative people quite today … it was a game in which we needed to go for it , and we did … Moyes must now be given the chance to build a squad that will compete next season if you judge him by today’s game . He knows how so give him the opportunity . Not everyone will agree , that’s only natural , but I can see no good reason not to offer him a new contract .

  • Hammer64 says:

I agree Kevin. But I suspect we may be in a minority. I appreciate that the ‘one good reason’ the Moyes Out supporters will put forward is the style of football. Like the supporters of Stoke, Leicester, Everton, WBA, Swansea. There are probably more. I predict Burnley supporters at some stage next season if Dyche stays. The only reason the most defensive of the lot -Newcastle & Brighton – have put up with it is because they are so relieved to be staying up. I don’t happen to think Bournemouth play ‘exciting’/’attractive’ football but the media love poster boy Howe so it has been labelled as that. As far as I can see pretty much everybody outside the top six play percentage football because that is what you have to do to survive. It just looks a bit better when you are doing it and winning.

Hailing said that, you can take the boring edge of it a bit when you have some good class footballers & you are not scrapping for every point (e.g. West Ham 2015/16- remember the French guy?) The only people who can do something about that are the owners. Like Hammerkip I am hoping they will now surprise us, but not expecting much. I can’t see the point of changing managers unless you are really sure you will be getting a better one ( you could definitely get one who will play sexier football but that won’t necessarily be winning football). Some players will want to leave, some will have to be shown the door. We need to bring in a goalie, at least two
defenders, two midfielders & another striker. That’s a minimum. So my prescription is the owners have to change (in quite a few ways) but then change the players, not the manager. Just my opinion.
