Moyes’ lockdown fears

|

David Moyes admits that he does not want fans to be locked out of stadiums as COVID cases continue to spike.

There have been a number of games postponed due to the surging Omicron variant.

Liverpool’s game with Leeds, Wolves’ clash with Watford and Burnley’s game against Everton have all been called off over the last few days.

There remains some doubt over Spurs’ game against Crystal Palace, too, but Moyes insists he does not want to return to Project Restart, when clubs were forced to play in front of empty stadiums.

Speaking ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Southampton, the boss said, as per The Daily Mail: “What I do know is my dad comes to games and I’d really hope the people he’s sitting around are all vaccinated.

“By the same breath I’d like supporters to stay at the games because I don’t want to go to how it was.

“We had one Europa League game in Vienna a few weeks ago when there was no crowd there and it felt rubbish. It really did. Felt rubbish.

“I don’t want to go back to that . We honestly don’t want to and I don’t think society does.”

A win for the Hammers against the Saints would move them within one point of fourth-placed Arsenal, with a game in hand on Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

The Irons have not lost to Southampton since 2017, although the last meeting between the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw last season.
