Moyes’ penalty verdict

|

David Moyes refused to condemn referee Anthony Taylor for awarding a controversial penalty in West Ham’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Hammers ultimately lost 2-0 at the Emirates as goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe ultimately proved decisive for Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, their task was made all the easier in the second half when Vlad Coufal was sent off for a tackle on Alexandre Lacazette in the box.

He was shown a second yellow card and Arsenal were awarded a penalty, although Lacazette saw his resulting effort saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

Still, Moyes refused to lay into Taylor afterwards, instead insisting that Coufal could have got more of the ball, even if replays did prove he got his foot to it first.

Speaking after the game, as per Football.London, Moyes said: “He got the ball but he should have got more of the ball. His timing means he caught the top of the ball and followed through and I think that is why Taylor had to think about the decision.

“I thought Vladimir could have got more of the ball.

“It is the ref’s decision and we gave him the opportunity to choose one.”

The Hammers have subsequently slipped out of the top four and are currently fifth, now one point behind the Gunners ahead of Thursday’s games.
