David Moyes has refused to discuss his future at West Ham. Asked by reporters after the Leicester City win he repeated that nothing will be decided until the end of the season.
Moyes refused to be drawn into speculation on his future saying after the match on Saturday “Well no because we’re not safe yet are we? So until we get in a position where we sort of completely there, and even if we were…I think we are getting into the last week now so I’ve always said that I will never be doing anything ‘til after the end of the season and that won’t change.”
On Friday he criticised a culture of leaked stories at West Ham which was seen by some as a dig at the board and their openness. He wrote in his London Standard column it is a culture he would love to change. He is also aware of a large social media swing against him in online polls which indicate that supporters don’t think he can take the club any further.
In reality, the board’s options are limited, there is not an abundance of quality managers available this summer and the most likely outcome is he will be offered a one or two-year extension. A club insider previously told C&H ‘the board not consider replacing Moyes with a manager with inferior experience or record just to satisfy fans’. Of course, Moyes himself could have the last laugh and turn down the job offer but I think he still has a point to prove to the world of football and there doesn’t appear to be a queue of clubs to offer him alternative offers.
I said last year that Moyes would do a good job and keep us up. That has now come to pass and I thank him for that. However, he is not, in my opinion, the man to take West Ham forward. That man is David Wagner, and the board should now do whatever it takes to get him (assuming that he would be willing to come).
I think in fairness to Moyes he cannot really discuss his future as it is not in his hands alone but depends on the board
While I was one of those who said that he should not automatically get the job I feel that he at least deserves the chance to outline to the board what he would do – and if they are impressed he should be given a two year deal
My fear is that the board would not necessarily appoint someone better – but lets wait and see – we can all dream of Tuchel etc
