Moyes: “They were brilliant but the defence needs work”

|

Beaming David Moyes was given the perfect response by the Hammers squad after overseeing the first game in charge of his second spell as Hammers boss.

It could hardly have gone more perfectly for the new man in charge with his captain leading supremely on the pitch and scoring twice whilst the record signing produced a goal from the footballing gods.

There may well be manager bounces but this was a somersault to leave the man in charge of the opposition- and desperately wanted as our new man by so many – staring bleakly down the barrel.

West Ham were superb and the boss couldn’t have been more pleased as we came out of the bottom three we had fallen into with Villa’s win earlier in the day.

This was a great start but that’s all it is at the moment although Moyes can now approach the future with much confidence after a great start.

Talking at https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/january/01-january/david-moyes-players-made-it-easy-me he said:

He said: I’m smiling, aren’t I, and that makes a change! I’ve got to say the players were brilliant today. It was a great performance and I was actually disappointed we didn’t get another one late on, because we might have done.

“Anyway, I’ve got to say the players played really well. They were great and the supporters were great as well. They gave us a real backing and I think, to be fair, the players gave them something to shout about today.”

I felt that once they got the goal, they started saying to themselves ‘I’ve got a bit of belief here and we can do this’ and I thought their confidence did come back.

“For periods in the second half, we controlled the game and passed it well and maybe we could have had other goals.

“For me it was good to see people like Seb getting a goal and Felipe get a getting a goal and it would be wrong of me not to say how well Mark Noble played today. I think I’ve come back and it’s a new man. Maybe it’s his brother because he was so good today he looks much younger than when I left!”

“I said to the players that what they’ve done today has to be the least they do in all the games. The one thing I will say is we will get much better. I believe the players will get better and hopefully they’ll grow in confidence from this result.

“I want the football to improve. I’ve got a lot of work to do on the defensive stuff because I still feel we gave up a couple of chances that I didn’t like.

But we’ve been in for a day and a half and I can’t take any credit for the result. I have to give it all to the players because their attitude today was good.

“I did say to them ‘I think you have got to show the supporters you care, you want to do something different and be better.”

Great words, and good evaluation, Mr Moyes. We are all elated with this win, and agree it could have been more … but 4 is very satisfying.
We agree no one was super-great today … but the strength as a unit was obvious. For the first time in a long time we are happy and hoping again. And yes, mr Manager, please keep on working the team hard. We need to nest in a much higher log position, and have awesome achievements.
    Coyi. God bless West Ham.

Great result today, onwards and upwards. Just a shame so many of our supposed fans are stupid and deluded. There are pipe dreams and there is reality and today was the latter.

Great man management on display already. Come in, stir the players up a bit with a few words and give them all the credit for the performance. Their confidence will clearly be up as a result of the win, the performance and that will only be improved by hearing the bosses words of recognition ringing in their ears.
I think tonight highlights that Pellegrini had lost the dressing room and the players weren’t putting a shift in for him. If anyone has just watched the Arsenal game, the Gooners have done the exact same as our boys did tonight in they played with belief in what they were doing. David Luiz gave a very honest interview about confidence and energy when you have belief in what your doing and when as a player you have faith and trust in your manager.

To think 2 weeks ago if we saw a lineup with no Antonio that would have been like the kiss of death for us so that’s a bonus too.Higher press and support for Haller made such a difference.A good transfer window is imperative too with Moyes hopefully looking at youth and pace.

Hi well … I didn’t agree with just the defensive side needs more work … I think our attacking needs more work then defence ……. how many times are we passing the ball back and not swinging in crosses and giving the ball away ????? Defence is better then offence 100% both need work not.just defence … take your head out of your ass

Thank you David for bringing back real Fight & desire for the shirt, a formation, confidence and some excellent passing attacking moves. I have to say it’s one of the best performances I have seen since 2015.
I was one who wanted DM to stay in 2018, as the transition was already taking place, hopefully now you and your back up team get a proper backing from the board and a continued response from the players as your combined experience, tactical awareness and knowledge deserves.

  • The Honest Friend says:

Thank goodness we played THE WORST team currently in the premier league, at exactly the right time.

Dont get me wrong they would have been thinking the same thing before Pellers was sacked.
Hopefully the confidence from this game can really push the team forward, and on to bigger better things.

Moyes isn’t wrong, a long needs work, and we definitely need a few new players to come in, but itwas definitely a great start.

Wonderful uplifting performance a mixture of delight and relief! Proud of you all for giving all and I know there is work needed but you can only beat what’s in front of you. David M showed class and composure by taking the job with grace and motivating a depressed squad. COYI

I was disgusted that Moyes wasn’t kept on the last time. The owners experiment into South American football was a nice pipe dream but was always destined for failure in my opinion. Thank you David the Moysiah Moyes for bringing back the gonads and grit that are required for the premier league. Now we just need some of our fans, you know the type, the ones who’d like to see us get relegated to spite the board to stop talking about protests and to grow a pair and stop spitting their dummies out of their prams like spoilt little brats that didn’t get everything they wanted for Christmas. We are West Ham UNITED. If you don’t like it bugger off and give your negativity and non support to some other team.

  • raymond gritz says:

Thank god there is at least one worse team than ours…now let us find 2 more teams !!

  • Whambo says:

Before the first goal it looked much the same, nervy, bad first touch, misplaced passes. The first goal, and it changed. When the next two goals went in you could see them relax more, confidence returning, good movement and passing, players making themselves available. In the second half it was brilliant to watch. I know it was only Bournemouth, but they have been a bogey team in the past. All this before Moyes couple put his stamp on it. I hope it’s not a false dawn, but I feel a bit more positive for the future.
