Having dispensed with the services of El Hadji-Malick Diouf a week before the end of the summer window, West Ham were struggling to bring in a new left back signing ahead of the window closing to bolster their defensive options.
Embarking on a four month championship campaign with only Ollie Scarles as the sole left back was not an option, with all due respect to the youngster.
In the end, the Hammers appear to have triumphed with their deadline-day signing of Adama Boiro (already becoming known as ‘Bic’): Time will tell but surely the 24 year old will be ahead of Scarles within the West Ham pecking order. The BBC.co.uk web site made the level of experience which Boiro possesses clear when confirming his arrival on a loan with option.
“West Ham United have signed Athletic Club left-back Adama Boiro on a season-long loan deal, with an option to buy…..The 24-year-old has played 45 times for the Basque club, including six appearances in last season’s Champions League.”

Adama Boiro – ready for a debut today?
Boiro, in fact, arrived late thanks to a deadline day delayed flight and was only just processed in time as West Ham almost paid a high price for leaving a deal until the eleventh hour.
Whilst he’s a relative unknown to us and to Hammers fans, surely 45 La Liga games and six Champions league matches last season is not the profile of an Ollie Scarles’ understudy.
If he’s fit enough and up to speed, expect to see him make his debut this afternoon.
Let’s not get carried away , Scarles certainly tries hard in games and has shed a tear when he made a mistake, let’s not pillory him because we might need him if the new guy (Bic) bombs or gets injured . Should also remember the proven stars who have come to the club and failed,Ollie Scarles is 1 of our own .
I dont think he was 3rd choice ..14 la liga appearances and 6 champions league appearances , actually 23 appearances in all ,, As far as my research goes he was number 2
Hope to see Austbø. We have 3 right-footed, inverted left wingers when including Ajala. In the bunch. Would be nice to have a RW Bowen replacement, to help carry the load through a long season. Then there is left-footed Maxwell Cornet, but so far unseen. Hope he battles his way into the team and remains injury free.
Scarles last weekend was suddenly curling passes down the line with his left foot, concentrating for 90+ mins, hitting in dangerous crosses with his right foot on occasion and seemed to have a very good game – a big change all round from other games. It shows the patience needed and still a way to go I’m sure, but great to see.
Cover for Bowen should have been addressed during transfer period.
Pacy player who could cover all positions across front line.
Note he was the third choice at Athletic Bilboa and was loaned because deemed surplus. I would think he needs to earn the jersey and justify selection, learn the team tactically. Especially if you were not used to the players and league
Makes perfect sense 💯
No doubt at all that he should play . Scarles has had multiple chances and sadly made multiple mistakes. He has little positional awareness and no pace . The effort is there but the ability is limited. COYI ⚒️
