Caught up amidst the fanfare and well-trodden media statements welcoming Nils Koppen to West Ham was one line from the man himself which grabbed my attention more than any other.
The Hammers’ new recruitment director said on the official club website, “If we can keep that together and not make too many changes, we can start off with a good base.”
Exactly What Supporters Wanted To Hear
In isolation, that would ordinarily come across as wishful thinking or hope rather than a pledge or a mandate.
However, when coupled with the club’s own public commitment to keep hold of what have been described as key players, as well as private messaging coming from the ownership and senior management, it really does imply that West Ham intend to retain as many players as possible.
Because make no mistake about it, as talented a talent spotter as Nils Koppen may be, our best chance of gaining immediate promotion from the Championship is to keep hold of the quality already at our disposal.
The Foundations Are Already There
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen is highly likely to be the best player in the EFL if he can be persuaded to remain at the London Stadium.
Taty Castellanos will surely be amongst the contenders for the Golden Boot.
Factor in Konstantinos Mavropanos, who should be a level above any other central defender in the division, and it quickly becomes apparent that the Hammers already possess a core group capable of hitting the ground running.
Add to that the promise shown by Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Soungoutou Magassa and Mohamadou Kante, and there are genuine reasons to be excited before Koppen has even opened his laptop and started working his way through his recruitment database.
A Strong Core Already Exists
So even allowing for the departures of Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, West Ham still appear to have a nucleus of players capable of taking the Championship by storm.
A strong core exists.
The same who served up championship level performances last season
Why is this squad suddenly a premiership squad when laat season you me and most were saying most the players are championship level? 😅.
What we do need in addition to replacing those off , is some proper leadership on the pitch.
So important we buy players who we feel can make the step up to the premier league.
The level of squad turnover for the past 4 years is incredible. Difficult to build a team spirit when it’s like a revolving door.
