It wasn’t rocket science – no England starting place for Bowen

|

It took no working out but Gareth Southgate does not start for England but instead is one of  11 subs in the squad which takes on Italy at Wembley this evening.

Jackk Grealish is also on the bench along with Trent Alexander-Arnold as manager Gareth Southgate makes 11 chances from the team that beat Australia last week.

Whilst it is pleasing that Jarrod is involved it was clear from the moment the squad was selected what the two likely teams would be for the games were likely to be.

It is a lot less clear that  Southgate knows nothing about the Hammers winger and won’t find out much tonight from a game that matters.

Declan Rice gets called up of course but like a few others I won’t be watching – no interest in seeing squads called up where players that matter don’t get a chance to show what they can do.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier, Phillips, Rice, Rashford, Bellingham, Foden, Kane.

Subs: Johnstone, Gallagher, Colwill, Ramsdale, Guehi, Dunk, Grealish, Maddison, Watkins, Bowen, Alexander-Arnold, Henderson.
