One place remaining in the West Ham squad

|

West Ham have just one place remaining in their 25 man West Ham squad and that could well be filled this January transfer window.

Samir Nasri became the 24th player to be registered with the Premier League as part of their twenty five man squad.

Seven of the twenty-five players must be homegrown and the moment these are Michail Antonio, Andy Carroll, Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks, Moses Makasi, Mark Noble and Jack Wilshere. Should any of those seven leave this January they would need to be replaced by another homegrown player over the age of 21.

The sixteen non-grown players consist of Marko Arnautovic, Fabian Balbuena, Lukasz Fabianski, Javier Hernandez, Manuel Lanzini, Arthur Manukau, Pedro Obiang, Angelo Ogbonna, Felipe Anderson, Lucas Perez, Winston Reid, Adrian, Carlos Sanchez, Robert Snodgrass, Andrii Yarmolenko, Pablo Zabaleta and Samri Nasri.

Should the Hammers want to sign more than one more player this winter then one of these players above would need to be sold or stripped of their squad place and number for the remainder of the season.

Players under the age of 21 including Grady Diagana, Issa Diop, Reece Oxford, Declan Rice, Connor Coventry and Xande Silvre do not take up a squad place but equally, do not count towards the home-grown quota.

I think Rice Diangana and Oxford were all born within a few months of each other, all 19/20, but I thought Diop and Silva were over 21? One is French and one is Portuguese, so not homegrown, not under 21. Would they not take up a squad place?

The premier league published all the squad lists and listed the u21s/scholars and apparently dinagana and diop count as the latter (good news for us). Still room for another signing but if we are getting a Sanchez replacement who is out till April why not take him out the squad.

It’s Issa Diop’s 22nd birthday today and Silva will be 22 in March.

For the 2018/19 season, to satisfy the PL’s rules, U21 players will have to have been born on or after 01/01/1997, so Diop is young enough by 8 days.

Favourite fun fact is that Man U get to claim Lukaku and Pogba as homegrown!
