Posh boss admits “distraught” if failing to get Coventry

|

Peterborough United’s passionate hopes of signing Conor Coventry on loan look to be on firm ground this morning.

A loan fee has not been revealed at this stage but as friends and former employer of Posh director of football Barry Fry, the club won’t be looking for huge dough for the midfielder.

Fry had told Claretandhugh earlier that an initial loan bid had been made for Conor but at that stage the Hammers needed to strengthen in midfield and were hanging on to the under 23 player should nothing develop in the window.

Since then Nikola Slavic has arrived and it’s possible another may arrive allowing the club to let the Ireland international to leave for a season in the Championship.

No official details have yet been confirmed but it seems unlikely another club has hijacked the Posh move and owner Darragh MacAnthony certainly hopes that is the case as the club keep fingers crossed he is theirs.

He told the Peterborough Telegraph without naming Conor:  “It’s been a real labour of love with this midfielder as we believe he will complement the players we already have at the club.

“The Premier League club we have been dealing with have been brilliant with us to be fair, but they do have to strengthen in that area before allowing the player to leave and I fully respect that.

“I’m now confident it will be done and if it falls through at the last minute I’ll be distraught as we have been so patient with it.

Conor’s development will be accelerated by playing a full season in the Championship rather than the occasional game with us.
He will no doubt come back ready to challenge and play First-team football for us next season.
