Report: Irons in race for striker

|

West Ham are interested in a deal to sign Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, according to a new report.

Goal claims that there is interest in signing the forward from the Hammers as well as Newcastle United and Southampton.

Awoniyi played for Liverpool between 2015 and 2021 but never actually managed to make a start for the club because he couldn’t earn a work permit.

He went on a variety of loan spells, playing for FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, Gent, Mainz 05 and Union Berlin before making the permanent move to the latter.

In total, he has played 57 times for the German club, scoring 21 goals and laying on eight assists.

Awoniyi is 24 and is a former Nigeria U23 international with seven caps, and he would cost around £25m.

He is said to be keen to prove himself in England, and a portion of the fee will be due to Liverpool, as they negotiated a 10% sell-on clause when they sold him.

I’m sorry but shouldn’t we be setting our sights higher than a striker that Southampton and Newcastle are after? If we want to progress surely we should be competing with the top 6/7 teams for players
