Reported Hammers target set for £40m move

|

Nathan Ake could be closing in on a move to Chelsea from Manchester City, as per The Guardian.

The Hammers have previously been linked with a potential move for the centre-back, who can also play as a left-back.

Chelsea have launched a double swoop to sign Ake and winger Raheem Sterling, in a double deal that could end up being worth £90m in total.

Sterling is set to move for around £45m while Ake could go for a similar fee, and City are not expected to stand in the way of the Netherlands international.

Ake made 27 appearances in all competitions last season but just 10 of those were starts in the Premier League, and he is now seemingly set to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Given the fee involved in a deal, it is little surprise that the Hammers did not pursue their interest in signing the 27-year-old, who has a contract with City until 2025.

I do not think that it would just be about the fee it also has a lot to do with the player wanting to be here with us.
I could be wrong, but a move back to his former club doesn’t seem like the greatest move. Along with wages, these types of players find themselves in a money trap, where only certain clubs can bid for them.
    Football seems secondary these days.

    Certainly agree with The Cat.
Interesting article in today’s Sunday Telegraph showing plenty of players now free agents at end of contracts expecting high signing on fees and wages. Clubs here and in Europe are no longer willing to take the risk of squad unrest when so called free agents mess up wage structure. It also stated that we are the only club to have made a serious offer to Lingard. Vlearly his expectations are beyond what anyone will offer him. Let’s hope some reality kicks in with him and others or they will end up no money at all!
