Romano confirms Spurs agreement

Football transfer ITK Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham’s move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has been successful.

It means Spurs will pay the Hammers the full asking price of £85 million for the Portuguese 21-year-old in a deal which would become West Ham’s second-highest sale behind Declan Rice.

Tottenham had been battling it out behind the scenes with Manchester United who, despite multiple promised bids, never got round to making a firm offer anywhere near Daniel Křetínský’s valuation.

West Ham played hardball throughout the negotiations, refusing to accept anything less than the £85 million asking price, which sees the club more than double the transfer fee paid to Southampton less than 12 months ago.

Nuno was never going to stand in the way

Speaking on his X account, Romano said:

“BREAKING: Tottenham agree club record deal for Mateus Fernandes, HERE WE GO!

Agreement in place at £85m fixed fee as West Ham accept the price they’ve always asked, 100% guaranteed.

Man United will now focus on different targets in midfield.”

Since Daniel Křetínský took control of West Ham, the club has pledged to keep hold of its key players, which Claret & Hugh understands is still the case, although there was always an acceptance that Fernandes would leave.

It’s believed that head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has been given assurances by Křetínský and the Hammers board that he does not have to sell any player he wishes to keep.

And clearly, with Fernandes’ agent being Nuno Espírito Santo’s close friend and fellow Portuguese, Jorge Mendes, there was never going to be a situation where the Hammers head coach forced his compatriot to remain at the London Stadium.

I’m gutted. I’d just renewed my season ticket. Now I wish I hadn’t. Selling Fernandes to Tottenham is the worst possible kick in the teeth. Just when I thought the club might be starting to understand what’s important to the supporters.

  • Spindrift says:

85 million guaranteed is a good deal at this point, and I’m sure Spurs supporters would love to think we’re gutted it’s them. I’m not. Time to look ahead.

Disgusted why do we deal with totscum and arse wtf is wrong withus

  • Timbo says:

Making the best of a bad job, some will be gutted about the destination but how we compare to Championship sides is all that matters for now. Hopefully we are also getting close to bringing some in as only 6 weeks until it all kicks off again.

    Best of luck to Fernandes.
He was always going to move on, and maybe again from Spurs when he gets stuck in another relegation fight.
West Ham are getting a fair price at a time they need it.
    Move on.

When I was a child there was a comic in the 70s called Scoop which featured a player who was the first football mercenary…it foretold the Premier League era…

  • Martyn says:

It’s a good deal, he was always going so to get 85m I’m happy. Shame it was spurs, not because I’m anti but because he won’t win much with them. I think it’s exciting times and I am looking forward to the change at the top and the challenge ahead.
For me the football in the prem has been predictable and boring, roll of the championship, much more fun.

Fernandez has picked the perfect club to complete his hat trick of relegations. Let’s hope he is successful in this goal 😊⚒️⚒️

  • Levygenius says:

Just rename yourself Spurs B and be done with it. You lot wanted moyesy out and got what you deserve. Theres a real delusion in the fan base as to what west ham is. Clutching on to spurs being their big rival being the obvious one. At least you finally have your real rivalry back.

    • John Ayris says:

Spurs went mighty close to being relegated so fans are in no position to be giving it big. What you need to deal with is Arsenal being so superior, whoever our rivals are we’re not that much of a second fiddle eh…

    • Neil Down Under says:

Yeah whatever, it still puts us way above the Spurs first team who have been SpursY for years.

    • FrankieMacsBack says:

      Yawn 😮‍💨🥱

    • Matt says:

      Big 6 club 🤣🤣

Wait…. thought Spurs fans claim Chelsea and Arsenal as their rivals. How many “Cup Finals”have you won against Chelsea?

Probably why virtually all teams class Spurs as a banter club.

  • Dudley Tyler says:

He was going whether we stayed up or not. This is exactly the kind of deal we say that we need to be doing, doubling our money in a year or so, just like the Bournemouths, Brightons and Brentfords. It is unfortunate he is leaving and also that it is to Spurs. But imagine the situation we’d now be in if we hadn’t bought Fernandes and Summerville. At least they sort the money issues out following relegation.

  • Paul Basnett says:

This is when relegation really hits home as the key players start leaving and keeps going and going. Whatever is said it’s hard to imagine any will stay unless they either want to ( unlikely ) or don’t get good offers.
Then the reality of loans and failed premiership players coming in. It’s a long way back.
Ironic of course it’s Spurs again when it so easily could have been them if Villa and Everton turned up and we didn’t pick a ridiculous team against Newcastle. Lot of lovely Spurs feeder team comments to come.

  • Dave says:

kudos and now Fernandez with £150m in the bank and sitting in the championship whilst the team who stayed up move forwards at our expense.
sums the club up and why they stayed up and we go the other way.
nothing will ever change unfortunately, club will forever have this about them. we will never grow..
let’s hope its three relegations in a row for him….

  • mark wiggins says:

    Good deal if true

  • Arniehammer says:

    Anywhere but them
